KeymasterPrivacy is a hot topic that concerns everyone. A lot of people consider instant messaging “safe” because of the informal nature of the communication. But is it really? Many instant messengers now store your buddy list on THEIR server, or store offline messages on their server. Is this a useful convenience, or an invasion of privacy?
What do you think?

MemberInstant messaging safe? private?
There’s a joke.
From script kiddies intercepting intransit messages, to businesses storing personal buddy list on their servers. Those lists were perfectly safe on my system why do they want them? a profit making business wants my data? my contacts? my surfing habits? to help me?. Oh, sure they do.
I’m waiting for the benefits, so far i’ve seen lots of unwanted adds, I’ve seen a major player rapped over the knuckles for attempting to sell portions of its client list. while interoperability is witheld by the same beneficent player. Gimme a break guys, I may be your pawn but I aint stupid.Edited by – rustedtight on 05/29/2001 06:29:29 AM

MemberOK big players, lets assume for one ridiculous moment that I believe you, its for my convenience, its to help me that YOU keep MY data on YOUR servers.
Simple for you to provide me with access to this data (MY data) to modify it as I see fit. Let ME maintain the integrity of MY data stored on YOUR server. let ME remove embarrassing data from MY files.
What? you wont? why? you use it how? its now YOURS?
Uh huh, and you’ll respect copyright too i’m sure.May 31, 2001 at 5:56 pm #69664rustedtight
Memberscene 2.
An equally ridiculous moment when I believe the player is doing it to improve my experience and to give me mobility across platforms.
OK its handy there’s no denying that. But umm why do they jelously protect their user list and foil interoperability?
Is it because I am the bait in a larger game?
IF, If they were honest they would accept interoperability, they wont cos I AM the bait in a game to attract advertisers.
Eventually the user window will get smaller as the advert window gets larger. Its your choice which IM you use, personally I dont enjoy being a sucker.June 1, 2001 at 4:36 pm #69662Fanatic

But umm why do they jelously protect their user list and foil interoperability?Yeah, AOL is pretty nasty about keeping other companies from communication with AIM. Let’s face it. They sell ads in AIM, hoping that a few people will actually click on them. If I’m using Jabber or Odigo to chat with my AIM buddies, then AOL gets ZIP! LOL
Of course, it’s a bit more complex than that, because AIM uses central servers as traffic cops…and servers cost $$$$$…but bottom line is more $$$$$ for AOL.

MemberComplex? central servers? traffic cops? I’m just a dumb shit female but I see no adverts on Jabber clients, maxxchat or the like. What? no central servers?. jabber dont want my buddy list, why not? maxxchat dont give a damn who I chat, seems OK with me, after all its non of their business.
Or is it? -
