Hardware: One user has a Dell Dimension 4600, using integrated Intel 10/100 ethernet. The other user has a custom built system (Asus P4C800-E motherboard) with integrated Intel 10/100/1000 ethernet, but normally connects to the Internet through an add-on wireless (Linksys) PCI card. Both have cable modem access to the internet. [Note: Firewalls are not the issue here. There are no software firewalls running, UPnP port forwarding is working well when connected through routers, and the same issues appear even when connected directly to the cable modems]
Issue: If either user connects using the integrated ethernet on the motherboard, that user can receive audio and video but not send. The problem is resolved when the user switches to a wireless ethernet connection, to dial up or to a USB ethernet adaptor.
Someone at Dell technical support advised the Dell user that the Dimension 4600 is not “set up” for video conferencing unless an add-on ethernet card is used. The other user’s vendor (of the Asus-based system) has no information to offer.
Has anyone ever heard of this problem or any limitations regarding the use of onboard ethernet (Intel or otherwise) for videoconferencing?
