Member🙂 I think this is an interesting forum, but was slightly annoyed at being immediately hijacked (or tried to be hijacked from this page when I made a post. Fortunately, SpyBot and Trend Micro saved the day

ParticipantHijacked? I’ve never experienced a “hijack” while posting on these forums. Please provide more details.

KeymasterMike, I don’t put anything on the site that would ever attempt to hijack your browser. I hate that stuff as much as anyone else!

MemberOkay – I was a little sparse with the details. I have two products that lock down my browser so than nothing can redirect it without permission. One of them – Spybot – pops up a message when it happens, The other Trend Micro’s Office Scan logs the occurence and places the site on a block list. Im not sure if its fastclick or who buit entering your site with the url https://bigblueball.com/forums/default.asp and proceeding here got a privacy notice from the broswer because it contained a ference to something in the *.qksrv.net arena which is a restricted site. I dont know where that came from. I dont think it is your doing in anyway, and the value of your site is obvious and worth a little unwinding of blocker settings (about which xenophobia is perhaps the kindest thing you can say. :D/ Thanks for your patience in the face of this grumpy old man. . . . .

KeymasterAh the qksrv.net link is from Commission Junction. They use a 1×1 pixel transparent image, sometimes called a “bug” to track how many times an advertisement is displayed. They do not collect any personal data; only aggregate data for reporting purposes. It’s a common practice, and their privacy policy promises that they do not do any sort of user profiling. CJ is pretty well respected, or I wouldn’t be dealing with them. Some spyware programs will detect these “bugs” and cookies as well, but they are generally innocuous.
For what it’s worth, I have been approached by companies pressuring me to run advertisements that I DID promote adware and other such scumware. I steer clear of them. My rule of thumb is if I wouldn’t want to see it, click it, or if I don’t personally trust the site that it comes from, I won’t use it here.
It’s all a matter of trust. BigBlueBall has been growing for three years because we’ve made it a friendly, safe place to get answers to your IM questions. We have been, and want to remain, a trusted resource.
If the explanation doesn’t clarify the purpose of the 1-pixel “bug,” or if you have other concerns, please let me know.
