At work I have Internet access via a windows terminal server and Citrix ICA client.
I cannot download or change any Internet Explorer settings.
I can download to another PC to a memory stick and install from the memory stick to my PC.
I installed Yahoo messenger but none of its connection settings work, including port 80, among others.
I tried out this “hopster” software and it says all ports are blocked.
When I go to Yahoo’s web messenger it just stays disconnected.
MSN’s web messenger seems to connect, only the contacts do not go online.
this new software eMessenger seems to work because I could send IMs to a dummy account I set up, all from my computer.
I cannot find any ports that work. I do have e-mail and regular Internet access.
By the way, I cannot save passwords to any log-ins whatsoever.
What is going on here?

Most likely they have blocked the ports typically used by the majority of instant messaging programs. They may even have filtering software that detects IM packets and blocks them. Sounds like where I work!
eMessenger will work, because you’re using regular HTTP traffic to visit the site, send and receive messages.
Another option that might work is Gush. It is a Jabber client. Like eMessenger, Jabber also uses plain HTTP communication to a server, which in turn translates those packets to instant messages and sends them across the appropriate network. The advantage to Gush is that once you setup a Jabber account (which you can do for free on their public Jabber server), you can connect to AIM, MSN, and ICQ (maybe even Yahoo… need to check on that one).
