This simply means that the perosn on AIM is using a service OTHER than AOL. Since most of the time it cannot determine the ISP or the OSP the person is using if its not AOL it just puts Internet or Unconfirmed Internet on there.
February 6, 2004 at 4:32 am #50225StarzGurl8o8MemberHow does it choose?
February 6, 2004 at 4:38 am #50220detn8rParticipantI dunno AIM, but most likely you’re IP, or the screen name. If it’s associated with AOL (ISP) then it knows. It can’t be too hard.
February 6, 2004 at 4:43 am #50223.ParticipantIt chooses it based on you IP address to the main server. If I have the network from 172. or another of AOL’s domain IP ranges it knows I am on AOL and not some other ISP.
February 6, 2004 at 5:03 am #50230panickedthumbMemberunconfirmed internet I always thought meant that you haven’t confirmed your account… because when I signed in with sn’s I hadn’t confirmed it said that, but just “internet” when I signed in with ones I HAVE confirmed.
February 6, 2004 at 5:16 am #50228f0rbezMemberif it says “AOL”, then the person is using AOL. if it says “Internet”, then the person is using a service besides AOL (usually AIM) and has confirmed his/her screen name by replying to AOL’s emails. and if it says “Unconfirmed Internet”, then the person is using a service besides AOL (usually AIM) and hasn’t confirmed his/her screen name.
February 6, 2004 at 5:19 am #50227f0rbezMemberin addition, if it says “AOL, Internet” or “AOL, Unconfirmed Internet”, then the person is using both AOL and AIM. also, it could say “Mobile Device”, ect. depending on how many different ways the person is signed on.
February 6, 2004 at 7:04 am #50229panickedthumbMemberOK f0rbez, that’s what I thought, but I thought I was going crazy there for a bit. Thanks for the help!
February 6, 2004 at 5:04 pm #50222DavidParticipantAFAIK The difference between “Unconfirmed Internet” and “Internet” is that AOL is sending packets but some are lost, thus they can’t confirm you are an Internet user.
I’m on a LAN so I’m always an Unconfirmed user, however if your connected directly to the Internet without a strict firewall, you’ll probably be an “Internet” user.
None of that really matters though. 🙂
February 6, 2004 at 6:40 pm #50231panickedthumbMemberAll the research I’ve done on google, since the last post came up saying that if you don’t send in the email confirmation, you’re unconfirmed internet, and if you do, you’re just internet… but it really doesn’t matter a bit when you get right down to it, no services are restricted.
February 7, 2004 at 3:22 am #50226f0rbezMemberDavid, I’m sure that it has to do with replying to that email. Try it and I bet that your screen name will come as “Internet”
February 7, 2004 at 4:34 am #50221DavidParticipantAh, yes, I was incorrect. 🙂
February 7, 2004 at 9:13 pm #50232SpanawayMemberThat was a really good question, though.
