Ok, this is just what I want to know… but what is your mental picture of Iowa? like: red school houses? lots of corn? I’m really curious! (ya, I know, curiosity killed the cat and all that… o well)
for example: when I think of Greece, I think of white poles and really cool architecture… statues… and such.
My mental picture of Iowa is pretty accurate, actually. At least for the parts I’ve been through. Fields (yes, some are corn), small towns with cobblestone Main Streets, barns, pastures, etc. I haven’t been to the major cities in Iowa, but that’s what I’ve seen the rest of the times I’ve been through Iowa. (I have relatives in Iowa) Not too dissimilar from where I live now.
Being that I lived most of my life in Rochester (South Eastern Minnesota), Like Tom I have a pretty accurate idea.
But that doesn’t stop me from making fun of it *cough*.
*puts on thick minnesotan accent* “CORN! COrn for miles and miles and Cows! More cows that people! They don’t even have a census for people, just for the livestock! And when you drive though, it’s like two hours of nothing but flat fields and cow poop smell with the occasional stop sign or Silo.”
Now then, I’ve driven through it many times, and only -some- parts stink. There’s more than just stop signs, they have lights too! *gasp* And paved roads! Once, when I was napping the driver got lost in Des Moines (Da Moin), I woke up and went “Hm, this doesn’t look like home…but strangely reminiscent of it” Though the streets were messed up in my opinion.
Funny story, in my hometown, there’s a sign just south of broadway that says Waterloo Ia (yes, the ‘A’ is lowercase). My boyfriend at the time looks at me and says “We have a city called Waterloo-La?”
I laughed so hard I swear I almost had to pull over.
Interesting Idea, though. Asking what the mental picture of a place is. I’d ask what Minnesota brings up but I have the feeling that thick North Dakota Accents and Hockey come to mind, so I wont even bother. Heheh.
To me, all these midwestern states are basically the same, Sami. I think I get the same mental picture of Minnesota as I do of Iowa, Wisconsin, North/South Dakota, Illinois… plenty of open space with roaming cows and barns (ok, the cows do more roaming than the barns), just with varying degrees of ey der
accentsdialects.Yet….if you go south in Illinois…say round about Springfield that “upland southern” accent makes you wonder if you are in the midwest. As far as my view of Iowa…there were people in college who claimed it was an acronym:
“Idiots Out Wandering Aimlessly” and said it was rows and rows of corn. Personally I’ve never been in Iowa…but I’ve been in far western Illinois…I’d reckon they are about the same…rather flat. But I HAVE heard that Iowa City is a nice place.
