I was in a chatroom at bolt.com, and I never share any personal information. The only thing that was visible was my screename and profile which I don’t have anything. Someone posted my IP address, then traced the city and state of my ISP.
My question is, how can someone possibly get an IP address when only the screename is visible? I know how to trace an IP address through programs out on websites, but how can they trace through a screename that only see profile if you have one and private chat which I didn’t use.
I read things out there, but so far I haven’t found how someone can trace through a screename, and how they do it.
Please help. Some of you know how to trace through a screename, but why not share even if you say it’s harmless?:confused:
That’s rather simple. Every direct connection on the internet reveals your IP address. However, if you have a router or a firewall you can safely stop being paranoid.
well at http://www.imchaos.com there is a link spy, which is basically a link you can put in your profile. If anyone clicks on it, it tells you and it will tell you from what city they are from, I have an example from mine. And see since I have a router My router I.p. gets picked up and gives a false location.

ys8er2323, routers do not spoof IP addresses. They simply connect networks together. What is shown is your external IP address, which is the only real IP address you will ever have when you are on the internet.

It doesn’t matter, don’t be paranoid. My IP is 68.109.19.190, my ISP is Cox Communications. I”m not worried about posting that, I know my network is secure as it can be.
Hello, I have firewall, and the person was not using the website, it was an empty profile of the bolt.com website, there’s no way that he could have used imchaos because it’s a profile from bolt that was empty because somehow some people can join the chatroom through somewhere else like someone said mirc or something.
I am not going to stop worrying because none of your theories support this, plus I read some older posts and some peole have claimed to know how to do this with only a screename which basically should make you annonymous.
There must be some explanation how this person got it.
We explained this. For everyone connection you make on the internet you will reviel your IP address. Even if the software only shows a nickname, there’s always an IP address under it.
I’ve said this a thousand times before. An IP address is not something not special. It is not something magical, it will not make you coffee and it will not give you access to governmental websites. It’s simply a way so computers can find eachother on the internet. If you have a firewall or router, then there is nothing to worry about.

I understand this, but HOW could that person possibly have seen my IP address? I did not see any IP address revealed of other people. The netstat thing obviously doesn’t work to show who is who unless you do a direct AIM chat. How did that person see my IP address?

well if he was an adminisrator to the site he would have access to the i.p. you signed up with.
What are exploits?
Also, an administrator has a red banner on their profile. I doubt it really was one. I just don’t think an administrator will pretend to be a bolt user without a red banner. I feel they take it more serious.
But what’s are exploits?
