Most worms that crop up in my PC seem to come from IRC Users who have managed to find a open port on my PC to upload a worm – they have managed to steal my credit card information and they have managed to steal my Yahoo ID’s , MSN Accounts , Hacked My Windows, Formatted my hard drive now you expect me to use IRC ?
August 4, 2004 at 8:52 pm #40730DJHyperbyteMemberStrange vb_packets, that never happened to me. I wonder why. Maybe your system is insecure and thus easily hackable? For example, do you run a firewall? Or maybe you went on IRC to piss people off and it backfired? Or maybe you are using mIRC and Internet Explorer and you clicked a trojan link someone sent you?
I’ve said this a hundred times before and I’ll say it again. IRC stands for ‘Internet Relay Chat’. And that’s all it does, really. IRC has no other function than to relay chat, client and server messages between logged in users. If people manage to do harm to your computer system by sending text messages to it, then where do you think the problem really lies?
August 4, 2004 at 8:58 pm #40734shifterMemberDJ is right, the problem isn’t IRC, it’s your computers security. In this case, I’d venture to guess that you were likely using an IRC Client with known vulnerbilities such as mIRC versions prior to 5.31. Have a look at this page for some more info on IRC worms and how they spread.
August 4, 2004 at 9:43 pm #40729Jeff HesterKeymastermy computer security is fine – I have Norton Internet Security 2004 will expire in 2005 also I have every single windows update so it cant be my system! really it cant!!!! I have not even got IRC installed as soon as I got back online after a format I seemed to of got the virus from a IRC User ahh well its fixed now anyway becouz I edited the registry to remove the worm and also norton deleted it ! seems to be a new one that was out like a week ago I think msconflg.exe
August 4, 2004 at 10:26 pm #40735shifterMemberHow could you possibly get a virus from an IRC user if you have no IRC clients installed?
December 18, 2004 at 2:25 pm #40736DazYaMemberit depends on so many factors and if people want to focus on you or not
first off, if u dont have umode +x on, then you might as well say bye as your ip can be resolved from host and hence port ranges can be shown etc
December 18, 2004 at 7:19 pm #40731DJHyperbyteMemberUsermode +x is not available on all servers. Again, what you are saying only depends on your system’s security and not on IRC itself.
December 25, 2004 at 9:01 pm #40737DazYaMemberYeah for the crappy ircds :/
irc could have still played a part

No, as I have said before: IRC is an intenet protocol to relay chat messages between multiple clients. If your computer can be compromised because someone sends a text message to it, I would know where the problem lies: your IRC client. Forwarding text messages is all IRC does. 🙂

December 28, 2004 at 10:11 am #40738DazYaMemberI think you’ll find that 50 % + IRC users don’t use it for text messaging.
And it looks as though it had some affect on the guys machine(going by his word.)
