This thread in my opinion, is also getting a little out of hand. I don’t mean to put down Leapy and Annie, but I think we should be drawing up forum guidelines about what’s appropriate and inappropriate when posting in the What Makes You Laugh forum.
September 8, 2007 at 6:05 pm #164018Doris KenneyParticipantUnderstandably, it’s nice to have a place to post humor, if it’s appropriate for the people who visit BBB. Guidelines are certainly good, but as with any directions, people may simply ignore them, resulting in a lot of time spent editing/deleting inappropriate posts. Not to mention as with any group developing guidelines, it’s generally an arduous process to come up with a plan the majority feels is fair & workable.
I personally think music, books & other similar off-topic subjects are likely good fits for the people who may visit the site. They are also subjects where forum members still have an opportunity to share meaningful information. I’m not so sure about jokes.
I don’t know about you, but I get plenty of jokes in my inbox, 95% of which really don’t interest me. Nothing’s worse than the contact who sends every joke to everyone in their address book. The small percentage of jokes I actually pass along are usually directed to specific contacts I know will appreciate the humor in any particular one.
So I think before considering guidelines, perhaps an evaluation of whether the forum “What Makes You Laugh” offers anything valuable to site visitors? Could the space be better used? From what I know of everyone so far, I’m sure the “internal debate” is sparks doesn’t mean anyone posting legitimate questions/requests for help is in any way getting shortchanged, but would guidelines & constant editing/deleting of inappropriate material mean we have less time to dedicate to the true purpose of the site?
As I said in my post to Shrek – I’m not easily offended. But if I want jokes, appropriate or inappropriate – there are thousands of sites dedicated to humor of any kind. I can find it anytime I want it. After all that hot air I guess it boils down to whether this particular forum section offers anything valuable enough to warrant the time it would take to make it more site appropriate? When was the last time a post in there REALLY made you laugh??

September 8, 2007 at 8:34 pm #164007PolarBearNPRParticipantUmmm – I like it. As a matter of fact, I’ve repped both Leapy and Annie (who annoyed me at first with the graphics in her posts) for the jokes because they did make me giggle. After all, they are Brits, so we’ve got to cut them a little slack. 😉
And as far as the “what makes me laugh” . . . I think it’s good to keep it. As people sense community here, making connections with folks from all over, laughter is just another part of building those relationships. It can transcend borders of all sorts. And yes, we do have different ideas of appropriate and not-so-appropriate but those should be handled on a case-by-case basis; as we are so adept at doing. We also have a huge, varied customer base here. We do have threads on books, sports, music, games, movies, tv, jokes, and all sorts of different topics that appeal to our audience. I like what we have here, it’s well moderated by Andrew and is one of the places that lends personality to BBB. Many sites answer IM questions, but what keeps people coming back here is when they 1) Get a fast answer that works and/or 2) Connect with someone or some topic/activity here.

Do you think a “Mature Content” tag should be added in the title of the thread?
September 9, 2007 at 1:00 am #163994DavidParticipantI can’t honestly say I see a problem with that thread?
And that’s most certainly not a “mature” topic. Considering that the humor would just go over someones head, if anything.

That’s pretty much what I thought… As long as they aren’t swearing or posting anything really explicit, I think it’s just generally “fine”.
But still, Ryan and Philip did bring up a point: some of these posts can offend people.
Doris seemed to do a good job addressing the “issue” in this post. Should we just let this go now? :confused:September 9, 2007 at 1:30 am #163995DavidParticipant@MrOats 222729 wrote:

Doris seemed to do a good job addressing the “issue” in this post. Should we just let this go now? :confused:That thread was different, although I don’t find it offensive (and that is the common view on marriage in some ways), it was borderline offensive, and if taken as anything but humor, could offend someone. But if someone has a problem with the word “semen” or a Viagra joke, they should probably suck it up, since that’s not lewd or offensive to the vast majority. Note that the original thread in question did nothing but imply using innuendo, is that REALLY an issue?
September 9, 2007 at 1:49 am #164002MrOatsMemberDave wrote:it was borderline offensiveGood explanation. But think about it… Couldn’t plenty of jokes besides Shrek’s and Annie’s in the “What makes you laugh” section offend someone, somewhere? We left “those posts” alone…
Maybe we’re being too sensitive? (They are just jokes. :p)
Note: Although, some jokes (like things on sexuality and race) can be highly offensive/explicit or just wrong to joke/laugh along about. I’m not implying that every joke in “what makes you laugh” is/will be OK. I’m just saying that Shrek’s and Annie’s are, from what I’ve seen, OK to just leave as is.
I made a poll to see what everyone thinks on the issue. It closes at the end of September.
September 9, 2007 at 3:05 am #164013PhilipModeratorI voted for “be on the lookout” but what I intend to do from now on is to stay away from Shrek’s, Annie’s and Leapy’s posts in the What Makes Us Laugh forum. It’s difficult to draw the moral line between what is offensive and what is proper, and I, for one, am not going to do it in BBB. I can just voice out my opinion, that’s all.
September 10, 2007 at 2:51 am #163999MrOatsMemberQuote:I can just voice out my opinion, that’s all.You have every right to do that, and I thank you for doing so.
You did bring up a point… Their posts were “Borderline offensive”, as Dave mentioned. And plenty of jokes in the “what makes you laugh” section can be classified as that, if you really think about it.
If they “push” their postings farther, to the point of true harassment/discrimination, etc. I will not hesitate to take action. But, for now, I don’t think it’s a major concern.
September 10, 2007 at 5:34 am #164012PhilipModeratorFair enough, Andrew. Thank you.
September 11, 2007 at 12:20 am #164003MrOatsMemberYou’re welcome, Philip. 😉
September 15, 2007 at 3:45 am #164009PolarBearNPRParticipantOkay – pull the effin plug on this sh.t. I am sorry, but they have gone over the line here. I deleted one making fun of vietnam vets – completely tasteless. Reamed another about pedophiles. *speaks in a Samuel Jackson tone* Get these m.f. jokes off my m.f. board!
*yeah – I’m angry about this*
Have they been pm’d? warned? i’m so mad right now i wanna ban them (well Annie for sure) this second.
*update* I just pm’d her telling her the staff had taken note of the inappropriate posts and removed one, and that if she continues to post in this manner she may be banned from participation in this forum.
September 15, 2007 at 2:38 pm #163991Jeff HesterKeymasterHumor is a subjective thing.
I suggest that we keep disciplinary notes from the staff in PMs and out of the forums. If we get into an argument about what is appropriate or not in the forums, it looks less inviting to the first-time visitor.
And remember, there is another option besides banning people. We can simply delete the offensive post.
I don’t generally like to ban members who are actively participating (and not spamming). But banning is always also an option if they don’t get the message.

(etc.)Agreed . . . sorry, got a little carried away last night . . . something about her posts just struck a nerve. And now you know why I got the nickname polarbear. It might seem as if I’m cute and cuddly, and maybe a bit of a cool-headed critter; but if you strike a nerve, I’m gonna come out with teeth and claws and gut you but good.
