I see a lot of posts (some here and some in Microsoft discussion groups) with problems similar to mine, but no useful responses to any of them. When my friend invites me to view webcam – though it appears fine on his end – it locks him up and freezes his WLM. It doesn’t matter if I request the cam or he invites. I’ve had the same problem with mine as well when I try to send it or a contact requests to see mine.
It seems it’s started happening to several people relatively recently, which makes me think it’s a WLM issue not an individual user issue – especially since most people say it used to work fine (as it did for me.) After the webcam request/invite is accepted it seems to lock up, the cam never connects (though it says its loading), and any text sent from the point of the webcam invite/request acceptance seems to go lost in space or bounce back as undeliverable.
Any ideas would be most welcome as this is getting to be a most frustrating problem. In the past I’ve done all the reinstalls, allow UPnP etc., but I’m not convinced doing all that again is really the best solution. (in my particular case this is a UK to US or vice versa issue if that has any bearing on the situation.)
Thanks!!April 11, 2007 at 2:32 am #160259PhilipModeratorI think you’ve answered the question yourself, in the second paragraph. It’s probably an issue with the WLM servers and as such, there’s not much we can do at our end, except to bug the Microsoft people about this. In the meantime, you could just try audio without video, as audio doesn’t hog so much bandwidth.

patndoris, is this a problem you’ve always had, or did it used to work ok? If it worked ok in the past, has there been any change to your environment (new router, new firewall software, updated software, etc.)?

XP on the PC, Vista on the laptop. My contact is running XP. I have the latest versions of WLM, he has the one from the forced upgrade back in the fall. I’m 99% sure his UPnP is enabled and on his end his cam shows fine on his end until I click accept then it all goes south.
It worked as late as last week, though I had to completely shut WLM down and relog in to receive my contacts cam. On the PC I was only trying to view cam not send. On the laptop it’s both and I’ve not been successful with this contact in weeks.
I was able to send cam last night to a contact here in the US and it did not lock me up at all. So it appears to be some kind of conflict with this contact, although as I said – as late as last week it was working.
I was just wondering as I’ve seen at least a dozen different posts on various boards – but no one seems to have an answer. And several of those seems to find it to be contact specific as well. I too want to use cam only with text (no voice) as you did. I’ve spent lots of time trying to get familiar with the problems WLM has and how to resolve them, and this is one that has me stumped. But as I said it could just be a server issue and perhaps it will miraculously resolve itself.
Thanks for your input I appreciate it. BBB is a wonderful resource!!
