I just ran across this gem can you BELIEVE this? OR do you think it is just fine and no big deal?
August 7, 2006 at 1:44 pm #150078Tea GrannyMemberIt is not fine! 😡
Was she allowed to “text” in her resume when she was applying for the job?
Stating that this was part of the “youth culture” is just a cop out for a lazy person not wanting to do their job!
Or that person was too much of a coward to fire her face to face, and hoped the excuse would be widely excepted.
Wrong, wrong, wrong!!!
August 7, 2006 at 2:04 pm #150077MrEggsaladParticipantIf that happened to me, I’m not sure how seriously I’d take it. It would be a very CRUEL joke, but I’m honestly not sure if I would just be like “Um ok..” and move on with whatever I was doing. But, texting to fire someone? Talk about UNprofessional, and I doubt all this press will do much good for the person who fired her as well. Crazy, I’ve never been much of a texter and I would refuse to believe something like that over a text message.
August 7, 2006 at 8:18 pm #150080PolarBearNPRParticipantNot cool! And not “youth culture” either. When firing someone there are certain things you must do to ensure that the person got the information among other things.
I think coward is right. Boo on that company.
August 7, 2006 at 8:31 pm #150079williamleeMemberummmm now that is wrong (well of course) makes me wonder what the world will be like in another 20 years when all my food will have to be put in a blender and someone spoon feeding me say here ya go mr watts open wide oh wait im being texted darn well I am fired so good luck with your meal. argggggggggggg.
August 7, 2006 at 10:37 pm #150075TigerbladeParticipantsure, youth culture may rely on texting quite a bit, but NOT as a professional means of communication. if you want to fire someone, you tell them face to face or by telephone if absolutely necessary.
August 8, 2006 at 10:48 am #150081robertogaliniMemberSMS r not used in the business world, as much as i know- no matter how young the company wants to be, no1 makes obligating decisions and actions via SMS. although legally i think that like e-mail. written phone massages obligate.
personally, i think this company sucks, and they deserve the bad publicity.August 8, 2006 at 1:21 pm #150073Jeff HesterKeymasterAs Bela Lugosi once said, “There is no such thing as bad press.” This whole stunt is giving them more free publicity than ever!

And this story is going around pretty good. A few radio stations here in Toronto were talking about this story today. Amazing how much people are actually thinking about it.
