More and more companies monitor the web use of their employees. Do you do this at work or at home? Is it an invasion of privacy, or the right of the employer, monitoring use of company property?

That seems acceptable, lets face it, the man pays me money to provide a service or activity, that doesnt include goofing off chasing a recipe for dinner or chatting a friend. So long as he spells it out up front my privacy is in my hands. If I chose to compromise it then he will probably read my posts. How dumb must I be?
Consider, If I’m paying a servicman by the hour to fix my fridge, I’d be pissed off if he spent the morning chatting my neighbour on my time and I was expected to pay for it.
No my privacy is not invaded if I compromised it, knowing the company policy.August 29, 2001 at 6:01 pm #69552rhiannonMemberscrew the company.
the bottom line is….. at the end of the day I did all that was expected of me.
So I chatted my friends…………… so what?
So I chatted my mom n got a few clues for dinner tonite.
So I went online and hid my ID and talked dirty to the man.
If the man cant control his problems why shift them to me?
I did my job.

The company has the right to monitor my net use. It is, after all, their resource (computer and Internet access) and they may be liable should I do something illegal.
However…
I agree with rhiannon that net usage should be monitored to check on whether an employee is “goofing off.” The real issue is this: is the employee being productive? Are they performing as expected? If so, how does the occasional chat with a buddy differ from the idle chat over a cup of coffee? (hint: it doesn’t!!!).
In other words, as long as you produce, you should be allowed some freedom in how you use the web.
Of course, there are still some companies or managers that like to measure productivity by all the wrong things…so your mileage may vary.
