I see no mention of Jabber here or anywhere else on the site. So I’ll enlighten anyone who cares.
Jabber connects to a central Jabber server (of which there are many) which in turn connect to the various IM servers (AIM, ICQ, YIM, MSN IM). Thus, to juxtapose with Trillian, it uses less connections on your home machine, but risks potential security problems if you can’t trust the central server. (SSL is supported, but I’m not sure if this protects against the Jabber server.)
This central server scheme should make it easier to break (they can merely block any servers they detect), but it seems reliable. Additionally, very little beyong messaging is supported.
Most importantly, Jabber is GPL’d and there are there are many clients to choose from. For Windows I favour the Psi Jabber client (http://psi.affinix.com/index.php) and for Linux I favour Gabber (http://gabber.sourceforge.net/).

Sorry, I should have mentioned that Jabber is it’s own network as well. You can chat directly to other Jabber users without using one of the big four protocols.
Open your eyes, Cypher. We do talk about Jabber, just not that much. It’s in our IM Interoperability Matrix, on our downloads page, and in our links directory. And if you do a search the forums, you’ll find a lot of past discussions on Jabber.
