So, I obtained 3 JBL Control 25 speakers and I really have no idea how to hook them up at all. I have very little experience with speakers and sound systems. What do I need to use these speakers? And any help on the set up process would be great! Thank you in advance!
PS – Do I need to get a receiver?
December 12, 2009 at 11:44 pm #176089Jeff HesterKeymasterThose look like good speakers! These speakers (like most) are not powered, so yes, you’ll need to hook them up to an amplifier. What is the input source you want to use for the audio? Your computer? DVD player? Xbox?
Pretty much any of these can be routed through an amp, which then (duh) amplifies the signal for your speakers.
I’ve got an amp that I’m thinking of selling. It’s a Kenwood VR-2080 that supports Dolby, DTS, surround, etc. The only drawback to it is that it doesn’t have HDMI ports. Let me know if you’re interested.

Most likely I’d use them for my computer, so the lack of HDMI port is fine. I’m definitely interested, but I’m a poor college student at the moment, so I suppose I’m conditionally interested haha.
December 13, 2009 at 1:34 am #176088Jeff HesterKeymasterWell I have two HDMI devices, and might someday add a third in the future (Blueray). I’m trying to decide if I can get it all working ok with the cabling I’ve got or if I want to just upgrade the receiver, in which case I will probably sell it for cheap.
I’m going to test the cabling later today, and will let you know.

Yeah, it’s in great condition. Works perfectly… which is why I might not replace it. 😉
I’ve got it hooked up to an analog source right now, but I’m going to buy an optical cable this weekend and see if I can actually get dolby output from through my TV. The amp does support Dolby Digital and DTS, but in the past, I was not routing it through the TV. Instead it was source (i.e. cable box) > amp > tv. Because I’m now using HDMI cables to my TV, I’m trying source > tv > amp. If I can push dolby through the tv, I’ll probably hang on to it. If not, I’ll upgrade and sell this one.
Stay tuned.
