I am listening to the song “Move On” from Jet, and it bugs me that is so similar to Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here.” Yet when you look at the lyrics, they seem to be the complete opposite of “Wish You Were Here.” I was just wondering if anyone noticed this, and if Jet was trying to get across a message or just making good music by ripping off good music?
for reference to anyone who isnt familiar with the songs (i’ve never heard either one of them)… here’s the lyrics: Jet’s “Move On” and Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here”
i dunno, just briefly reading through the lyrics, they dont seem to be very similar or opposite at all, just different. maybe you have to be a fan of one or both of them to get anything out of the comparison?
Well in my opinion “Wish You Were Here” is comming home after a person is done changing their life, and “Move On” seemed like it was about changing their life by leaving home, and not comming back untill it was changed. That’s what I got out of it atleast.
I’ll have to compare the two songs tonight, but judging from the review here – http://www.suntimes.co.za/lifestyle/music/goodtimes/reviewjet.asp – you probably aren’t too far off base.
I highly doubt Jet admitted “copying” songs as this would lead to lawsuits galore, but I’m sure they did admit to having been strongly influenced by bands such as Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones and the Beatles. Many bands use great hits as sources of inspiration, I doubt there’s too much note for note identicals, but I’m sure there are strong similarities in melody and song structure.
