When I was growing up Yoko Ono was villified for her “part” in the break up of The Beatles. However, I think that Yoko & John will be remembered as one of the great romantic success stories of the last century.
I was listening to some of John Lennon’s solo stuff today and though it’s obvious now that however much Lennon critised Paul McCartney in the wake of the groups demise he was quite an average solo artist.
It was the blend of McCartney and Lennon that makes stuff like The White Album – so brilliantly underproduced [who has the talent to produce a double album of such a standard today even with the most elaborate production in the world?] – so listenable nearly 40 years after it’s release.
Even so, songs like “Oh Yoko” and “Hold on” from John’s early solo albums make me cheer for the success of their relationship against the grain of the World.

How the press love to knock her. I personally never read anything about her in the press, I only know what I can’t help absorbing. I’m sure she’s a fine woman. I doubt very much that Macca (thumbs aloft) is quite the saint he likes the public to think he is…
And he should stop dying his hair – he looks a proper ‘nana.

I know that you love I will from The White Album, which – unfortunately for the topic – is a Macca composition but it does give way to John’s song about his mother, Julia, and this juxtaposition probably illustrates as well as any other why Paul & John were such an effective combination.
