i noticed this on the news front page tonight, and since The Dude isnt around to liven up our days with News o the [insert time interval here],
Bike Lock Can Be Picked With a Pen. and of course I had to go find the video of a guy picking his lock in about two seconds
since i’ve got my bike with me on campus this year, i’ve noticed that a lot of the bike locks holding the bikes to the bike racks near mine use the Kryptonite lock from the news story… luckily I have a lock that’s not gonna be picked anytime soon… what are your comments on this?? is kryptonite goin down after this?? or are they gonna rebound and stay strong?

Do they sell The Club for bikes? I wonder.
Anyway I don’t think they’ll be going down. Anything that is a lock can be picked. The creator knows it’s weakness.
September 18, 2004 at 4:22 am #38054colinMemberIm not a cyclist, or even that big on bikes period, but I think its still pretty cool to know. Thats pretty crazy to know something as simple as a pen can leave a once-thought protected bike, defenseless.

Are you saying that security by obscurity is a good thing? It doesn’t matter what the weakness is, you should not be able to hack a lock with a pen, maybe lock picking tools, but a flipping pen?

October 3, 2004 at 10:38 pm #38056vikshankerMembermy way to pick a lock would be to:
a. take a hammer to the back
b. take a hammer to the front
c. lock cutters
d. C4! 😉seriously, locks provide a false sense of security. its so easy to break a masterlock its not funny. anything I dont want stolen- I keep on my person/at home, or with something like a bike- buy a crappy one that you can use to get around/afford to be stolen, or just hope that your bike doesnt look too fancy so people dont notice it/think about stealing it
