ParticipantI have an HP Pavilion N5470, 1GHz mobile AMD Athlon, 256 MB RAM, WinXP Pro SP1. NAV 2004, AdAware SE, Spybot, Spyware Blaster and just got MS AntiSpyware, all updated and scans come back clean. Recently did a disk cleanup and defrag as well.
Every so often, my pc will freeze for anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute or two. Usually it comes back fine, but once in a while it goes wacko on me. Any icons (quick launch, shortcuts, or files themselves) that I click on open up the properties dialog box instead of opening the file or app. Also I can’t type anything in any apps, the keyboard seems to activate menus instead. Only solution is a reboot, and after that it goes back to normal. It doesn’t seem to be a RAM issue, as it doesn’t matter if I have a lot of programs running or just a few.
When I first got the computer, it had SP2 and it was doing the same thing, but after we reinstalled XP, no problem, so I thought maybe there was a conflict with SP2 and my PC. But apparently not.
Anybody have any suggestions I can try before a format and clean XP install? Saving that as my last resort… I really hate going through all that!:crying:

ParticipantPerhaps your CPU is overheating? Have you checked your temperatures? is it hot on the bottom?

ParticipantI did used to have a problem with it turning off if I left it sitting flat on my desk, I have it propped up now so it rarely does it anymore. I did some searching and found out that some HP notebooks have overheating issues, and mine is one of them. I haven’t checked temps, I did try Motherboard Monitor once but I don’t know what my motherboard is or how to find out, and my pc wasn’t in the supported list. It does feel kind of warm, but I don’t know if it’s normal or too hot.

ParticipantTry some different power schemes maybe? [Control Panel > Power Options], one might make your CPU run cooler by having it process less? [Mine does this, but I have a different CPU]

ParticipantThe only thing the power schemes do on mine is control when it turns off the monitor and hard disks goes into standby/hibernate, etc. I have been looking at laptop coolers on Ebay, the little stands with fans to cool it off. Is this something worth looking into, and is there anything in particular I need to look for?

ParticipantI’m not sure whether or not they work well – my friends brother has one for his Compaq laptop, but I guess it doesn’t cool it off that much.
