MemberFor those of you here who are of the Christian faith, you already know that Wednesday, March 9 is Ash Wednesday. It is also the beginning of Lenten season. Lent lasts for 40 days and 40 nights, ending on Easter Sunday.
Many people of the Catholic faith choose to give something up for Lent. It cannot be just anything, though. It must be something you really enjoy, and make it a true sacrifice.
So, I am wondering…what, if anything, are you giving up for Lent? Why are you giving it up?
I am giving up Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. It is something that I absolutely love. I only drink DD coffee, so it’s giving up all coffee for me until Easter.
DD coffee is something I enjoy everyday. Although I am not happy about it, I am going to try and stick with it. I realize all of the things that Jesus has sacrificed for me, so coffee is like a walk in the park.
Now it’s your turn to share!

Memberi’m not of the christain faith, but if there was something, I would give up potato chips. But I wish I could give up homework 😀

KeymasterWell from what I hear fasting and abstinence is required on Ash Wednesday. Knowing the people down here, I wonder if anybody could do that. Oh and I always had it understood this was a Catholic thing. I don’t recall Christians here participating in Ash Wednesday, only Easter. Although there are people that consider both the same thing.

MemberActually gossiprae, it is not as volunteer as you make it sound, during this time, you are asked to give up meat on Fridays. That is because meat was a luxurious meal in the old days. You can adapt it, and exchange it for another sacrifice (that is, if you are not an strict catholic) , but according to the catholic church is still forbiden (kind of, of course) to eat meat on Fridays. Other lents are sacrifices are, of course, always welcome…, I personally don´t follow it, but, even if it is nonsense nowadays, that is the “official” catholic lent.
Mmm..I guess i would give up chocolate and sex..if I really wanted to show devotion…hehehe

Memberi’m not catholic, my dad is. therefore, of course, my mother never had a meal containing meat on fridays during lent, naturally. so i still follow that tradition.
yes miami, ash wednesday is a day of abstinence and fast for anyone of christian faith. some people follow differently than others. me, on the other hand, i am fasting today.
and, BTW sciencefeeling, it is voluntary to me. i was always asked by my parents to give up something that i enjoy, and i’ve always followed this.

Memberdidn’t “vatican 2” or whatever it was decide that not eating meat on a friday wasn’t necessary anymore? i’m fairly sure that prohibition was one of the ones removed…. pre vatican 2 (which i think was in the 70’s?) the not eating meat on a friday was there…

MemberThe giving up meat on Fridays(every Friday) goes back to the fisherman and merchants who were hurting for business…I’m a Catholic…but I’m also a historian and this I know is true. The Church has not always been as upfront about things as they are today. During Lent one is still supposed to follow this abstinence on Fridays during Lent and all of Holy Week.
I am giving up nagging on my husband so much. I actually do enjoy it somewhat…but I know it’s not a good thing. I’m going to only say something when it absolutely has to be said. It might make him happy too…who knows…February 10, 2005 at 12:30 am #114118colin
MemberI am Baptist, so we have never really done anything for Lent or Ash Wednesday. We do celebrate Easter of course though. From what I have seen down here, most teenagers that are Catholic don’t realyl follow through with their sacrifice for Lent.

MemberI was fasting today, because that is what my family does on this holiday. I didn’t follow through with it..about 4:00 today I was so hungry, my stomach was making noises so badly that I couldn’t concentrate.
I’m really not supposed to fast unless I get my blood tested. I’m hypoglycemic and my blood lacks sugar because of too much insulin. So if I were to not eat for long periods of time ( like today), it usually isn’t in my favor.
I had some pasta, but that was about it.

MemberLast year I gave up buying cds and dvds, after buying two dvd boxsets with a large price tag. This year will be different, instead of giving up something for lent, I try to gain something for lent. Like writing a whole book for lent.

ParticipantAlright, here is something I always propose to people who practice lent, and I have heard a multitude of answers for.
Nix the Meat on Fridays, right? What’s with the fish, guys? Last I checked, fish was indeed an animal and was concidered a “meat” product. Someone, school me here, I’m curious as to the answers I get in comparison to the answers I’ve gotten in the past.
As for me, I am not catholic, I’m actually, quite different as many already know, and really we don’t give anything up at any time of the year. The rule of “thumb” would be all about self good and constant self improvement and bettering of yourself and others and knowing yourself and what is and is not good for yourself and others. So I suppose we do ‘give things up’ all the time that can be difficult, just not in honor of a prophet, that’s all. Not so different when you get down to the nitty gritty.

MemberThats always slightly puzzled me Rk, but i think it’s because meat was rare, while fish was common so it was alll about denying luxuries…
Oh and curiously fish isn’t the only meat you can eat… the beaver is considered by the roman catholic church to be a fish…. as it lives in water apparently… no i don’t understand the logic completely myself, but trust me your ok to eat beaver on fridays… and i think theres another rodetn in s America you can also eat for simillar reasons… but i forget.
Penguins however are not fish… definitly… even though they go in water…
February 15, 2005 at 2:26 am #114115Oreo
MemberWell, I shall be eating no beaver in the near future, or ever if I can help it. I think the fish is not meat thing all harkens back to the “The fishermen need some business…throw them a bone” thing from back in the day. Penguin….I think you are thinking of the Nutria…a favorite down in Lousiana…mmm…large rodents…don’t you just love that?
February 19, 2005 at 12:25 am #114117RabidKitten
ParticipantYeah, I hear that they hunt Nutria for sport as well as they have people who work for the city that hunt them. How fun.
I admit that Beaver does not sound very scrumptious. Of course, Turtle and snake wasn’t either *makes a yuck face* It’s all chewy. But sunfish is yummy. Makes me wonder if it’s alright to eat Squid. Sushi restaurants must LOVE lent.

MemberI’m giving up soda for lent. I used to drink 64 oz’s every two days, I was a true ADDICT….. Maybe I’ll even kick this habit, I’ve been getting used to NOT drinking soda. I still crave that Vanilla COKE……
