I noticed while writing up a response to our “BBB future” discussion, the way individual posts are linked changes occasionally, even within the same thread.
Most of the time, if you check the link of any specific post within a thread, it displays as https://bigblueball.com/forums/######-post#.html where the six-digit number references the thread and the single digit references which particular post you want.
However, in some posts it displays as https://bigblueball.com/forums/showpost.php?p=######&postcount=# . This can easily be converted to the other form, and achieves the same result, but… why does it do this?
July 13, 2006 at 8:51 pm #147963SpikeMemberWe use something called vBSEO, search engine optimization. It converts those ugly URLs to nice ones with the thread title in them. If you see one like your second example, then there must be a bug in the system because those URLs should be automatically converted each time you visit a page. Where have you seen links like your second example?
July 13, 2006 at 10:49 pm #147961TigerbladeParticipantSpike… I noticed this while putting together my thread about the IM Centers (in the Staff Room, hence no link). See my post “Updating IM Centers” for an example.
July 14, 2006 at 2:37 am #147964SpikeMemberHm… I can’t seem to replicate the issue. If it was in a private area, then there’s no need for it to be search engine friendly anyway, because the search engine spiders can’t snoop around in private areas.
