I’m considering installing Linux on my computer, but I was first hoping that I could have a few questions answered.
1) I know there are many different kinds of Linux. What’s the best one?
2) I currently have XP Pro on my machine. If I were to install Linux, would I be able to still boot it in Windows?
3) Would I be able to access other files on my network? Other computers would be Windows XP Pro.
4) Are there any AIM add-ons that would work with Linux?

1) Well, because you are new, I recommend Fedora Core or SuSE. Fedora Core is my personal favorite, but I would wait to download it because FC2 is being released end of this week.
2) Yes, you would have to resize partitions to fit Linux into some free space using Partition Magic. Likewise, you could back up, reinstall Windows freshly on a smaller partition. For example, if you were to do this, you would delete all partitions after backing up and create a 30 GB NTFS partition using the installer, leaving 10 GB free space. (on a 40 gig HD) After you installed Windows, you would install Linux and tell it to use the free space (very easy in Fedora). Then the GRUB bootloader would give you 8 seconds at bootup to chose either Linux or Windows.
3) Yes, by installing the Samba client, you can access Windows Workgroups and share files.
4) No, you do not need them. Gaim is a multi-network client. It connects to just about every major IM network out there. It has all the features of any addon for AIM on Windows, yet it is free. Tabbed IMs, no ads, and Logging. Cloning isn’t needed because you can have many different accounts managed through Gaim.
