Over here in Malaysia, we’ve been plagued with WLM sign-in problems ever since the Taiwan quake on Dec 26 last year. Sometimes I can sign in easily, and more often than not, I have to try repeatedly to get signed in. At other times, WLM suddenly disconnects.
If you’re not from south-east Asia, other things can affect sign-in times. Just as Tkey pointed out, peak times, ISP bottlenecks, etc. Of course sometimes it’s a problem at Microsoft’s end, but let’s not jump the gun and blame Microsoft straight away 😉
The important thing is not to get too frustrated (easier said than done!) and maybe this is a good excuse to go get a snack, walk the dog, call your girlfriend or boyfriend, blah blah blah. You get the point 😀

This should not be the case. Something I have witnessed when upgrading from MSN Messenger 7.5 to Windows Live Messenger (when I was in Ohio) was that it went from instant-sign in to..well..really slow. This is obviously due to lack of available memory – running Norton Internet Security AND 256mb of RAM? I’m not surprised.
Your problem appears to be ’caused by a corrupt list-cache. Removing it is easy. Please do the following:
1.) Click on Start
2.) Click on Run
3.) Type %AppData%MicrosoftMSN Messenger
4.) Click OK
5.) Find your UserID relevant to the email you use to sign onto Windows Live Messenger (notes on how to do that will follow).
6.) Delete ListCache.datIf you want to work out your user ID you can use one of these:

Just an FYI. When I upgraded from 7.5 to 8, WLM actually signed in faster. Maybe things are a bit different in this part of the world :p And because of that Taiwan quake, my WLM 8 seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes signing in is fast, at other times, it’ll have lots of difficulty and then out pops those famous windows, saying that WLM could not sign in and blah blah blah.
Yes, it’s frustrating sometimes but I guess that’s life over here. I just have to be patient. Or I prefer to call it “frustrated patience.”

I myself, get random errors saying I could not sign in many times (not surprisingly with only one of my tester accounts). Has approx. 20 contacts, so signing in doesn’t take very long (when it does work), but if I’m loading an Internet page, or downloading something I more often than not get an error saying there is something wrong with the connections. It always eventually logs me in (after a few attempts, or when ever I’m finished loading pages and downloading).

Interesting! I’ve no firm data, but that’s certainly my impression here too – 7 and 7.5 were extremely slow loading (much worse than the other IM progs I use) but suddenly since 8 it’s speeded up considerably, to about the same speed as my ICQ, Skype, YM, etc etc.
