I’ve decided it’s time to upgrade my mattress. I’ve had my twin mattress for two years now (made sense when I was in college, and then just kept it afterwards) but I need to level up. I’m thinking at least a full-size, if not a queen.
Any recommendations as to good, quality mattresses? Serta, tempurpedic, whatever… I’d prefer to keep the price relatively low – under $800 for the mattress/boxspring set would be great, under $500-600 would be awesome.

I’d go with a queen since it’s easier to find bedding for that as opposed to a full, and if you’re expecting company, it’s more comfy. As far as brand . . . I’ve had several kinds and it hasn’t seemed to matter, they last 7-10 years. You’re not a big guy, so heavy-duty support shouldn’t be an issue. But if you’ll be sitting on the edge of the bed often – to put your shoes on or whatever, you’ll want to make sure it has a nice frame around that. Also, some places will “give” you “free” frame, bedding, pillows – look for the deals out there because new bedding’s gonna add to your cost as well. And watch for the sales, it seems they run frequently enough to get you what you need when you need it, at a price that’s reasonable. And unless you have back problems or other sleeping issues, I wouldn’t really worry too much about it, just go with standard stuff and you’ll be sleeping like a baby.
Just a warning though . . . do buy it from a known store. A while back I remember a story on a place that re-covered old frames and sold them at discount . . . well, the things they turned up would make you hurl. So make sure the bedding is brand new!

I went and bought myself a new Simmons Beautyrest mattress from Steinhafels – they were having a clearance sale of sorts, so I got a $800+ mattress for only $500 and some change.
It should be arriving in a few days, and… man am I looking forward to having a real-person bed instead of my twin.
Though, now I’ll have to find myself some dressers, since I’ll be losing my captain’s bed.

Silly, yet timely.
January 11, 2008 at 6:05 pm #165930FanaticMemberFWIW, IKEA makes some nice stuff, and it ain’t all cardboard.
That Lives in IKEA thing is hilarious! I’m surprised they let him do it!
