Hi there, I have a sony vaio pvc-rx462ds and the computer fan is really loud, and my brother has a vaio also just a lil newer than mine and you cant even hear is at all. My question is, can I turn down the fan somehow without taking apart my computer or does my computer just have some sort of defect to it? Its been loud since I bought it in 2001.
there is no control to “turn down the noise level of your fan”…it must be some kind of defect…but I use to have this problem…but than I released it’s just the fan is kind of touching a wire so it’s making funny sounds…just talk out the cover and just make sure everything stand clear of the fan and the you should be ok. And make sure than fan is not securely in place.
Normally the fan will speed up if the computer is hot. Tasks that would use hardware constantly would likely cause this. If you are using Linux, make sure ACPI is enabled and the drivers are compatible. Do not use the laptop on soft surfaces. For prolonged use, a hard top is highly recommended. The cost outweighs the risk in this case. You do not want it to overheat…like mine. -_-

in bios you can usually change your fan settings, however I wouldnt want to slow it down. if its speeding up its because its too hot. the only option would be to look into buying a quieter fan and replacing it.
sometimes they make weird noises and lock up before theyre about to die too.
My fan also is loud, but only does so when its still cold. In the summer, everytime I turn on my computer, the fan makes alotta noise, then after a few minutes it quiets down. But in the winter, it takes a lot longer for the fan to quiet down. I guess mine has to warmup first before it gets quiet…and I have no idea why.
Anyone have the same type of problem or knows how to fix it?
my system you tap F2 during boot. I suggest you dont mess with it unless you have a good idea of what your doing.
Also if your fan is running loud it could mean the inside of your computer needs cleaned.
Last year my fans ran loud and I keep getting errors left and right and would not let me get into windows and eventually the monitor would go black. Found out my computer fans both of them and the vents in the back of the computer were so dirty and clogged up that is made computer over heat, good thing I caught it in time or my computer would have been fried.
I had to take cover oof and carefully clean the vents and fans and everything else while avoiding not to damage anything at the same time.
Will have to clean it again sometime this year to be on the safe side.
