Tonight, my son went to log into his yahoo messenger acct, and a system box popped up, saying his acct had been locked for security reasons. I logged into his computer today, to try to put something on here he had ask for, and his yahoo auto started. I did nothing to it, but it connected then fine. Can anyone give me any ideas about what I can do to fix this. Should he just uninstall and reinstall maybe? Thanks ahead of time for the help. 🙂

Check out what Johnson says on this matter. Hope this answers any questions!July 8, 2003 at 5:03 am #60197melneeMemberThank you for the link. I didnt take time to research back, so thanks for showing that to me without telling me to look myself 🙂 I read it, tried the things he suggested, nothing worked. He has another identity that he can log into fine. I think he may have tried to sign in several times, and was entering the password wrong, without realizing it. It wont allow me to get a new password, or anything.
Thanks again for the quick response.July 8, 2003 at 10:05 am #60200JohnsonMemberALWAYS write down your passwords, unless you are at work, someone would have to break into your house to steal them, and it’s not like ids haven’t been taken b4 by people visiting others houses and watching them type out their password, and then going home and changing it. If you are frequently getting locked for security reasons then it is important that you ALWAYS sign into my yahoo first, b4 you sign into messenger, because on messenger you will get 1-5 login attempts b4 you get word verification, and i think once you get word verification, it starts saying, locked for security purposes. So if you login thru my yahoo, it will start showing you word verification(a word in a box you have to type in, under your id and password) if you put in the wrong password, and you will get up to 30 login tries. Word verification is very state of the art, remember that if u don’t spell the word right, even with the correct password it won’t login.
July 8, 2003 at 1:00 pm #60203freddyMemberThese errors occur for this reason:
Somebody sent many many requests to get into your son’s account. Most probably they didn’t want to gain access, they just wanted to lock it. Yahoo! has filters/monitoring going on the servers.
The average human could probably try 2or3 passwords a minute to get into their account (incl validation time) if they had forgotten password. Yahoo! is not triggered by such a low number of requests.
A program/cracker could probably send about 100-1000 requests a minute to an account, Yahoo! is triggered and locks the account so no more requests could possibly work (i.e. password cannot be guessed), and is for your own privacy and protection.
This happened to me the other day, and the person behind the requests told me they had done it, the account was locked for 48 hours.
Once you get that system message, its best to leave the ID without any attempts for 48 hours, because further attempts may prolong the ban.
July 8, 2003 at 8:42 pm #60199JohnsonMemberDon’t use messenger to login, if you are getting these warnings, go directly thru yahoo so you can see the word verification, it doesn’t matter if u do 5 or so failed login attempts in 5 minutes or 5 seconds you will still get the word verification. And if your account does get locked, IF YOU GO THRU YAHOO DIRECTLY, you can send an unlock code to your alt email, then goto your email, and unlock your account, I have had to do this b4. You just have to make sure the non yahoo email account you use, is in your yahoo ids account info. Once you get signed into my yahoo, then you can sign into messenger with no problems whatsoever. I just talked to a friend of mine the other day, and she is using proxies to crack, and when they use proxies it rarely if ever, locks the account or gives it word verification. With proxies they would run 500 or less passwords at a time, so if your password is something like 1234 or a common word, or a common name, you need to change it.
July 8, 2003 at 9:18 pm #60202freddyMemberYou can’t unlock your account on these locks, it’s not possible. Yes you go to http://login.yahoo.com/config/login and verify you’re not a bot through the word verification, but this doesn’t instantly make the account work again, you looking at about 12-48 hours before the lock is released, repeated attempts to login in this time may prolong this ban. It’s on a time delay with Yahoo!.
July 8, 2003 at 10:41 pm #60198JohnsonMemberA lil while back i locked up my own account, so i could see exactly what it said to unlock your account, and here is what it said, pasted word for word from yahoo:
“(your id here)’s account locked
You have exceeded the maximum number of login tries for the Yahoo ID (your id here). The account has been temporarily locked for your security.
You can wait 12 hours before trying to login again, or recover your ID and/or password by confirming your private information “
Accounts are frozen for 12 hours at a time, has always been like that. You are talking about a ban from chat or something else, it’s not making sense to me. I never get banned from chat, but I have had, the locked for security reasons b4 when i tried to login to messenger, and i would sign into my yahoo with the word verification, and then i would go back to messenger and sign in there with no problems.
July 9, 2003 at 11:48 am #60201freddyMemberMaybe a different ban, I just wish it said that for everyone, then 60% of people’s questions wouldn’t be required.
