A few years ago, the term convergence was hot — promising integration of all our devices and gadgets. Our PC, TV, entertainment systems, games and mobile devices would all work together seamlessly. We’re not quite there, but the boundaries continue to blur. I can now stream TV over the Internet using my Slingbox, viewing it on any PC with a broadband connection or even my Windows Mobile phone. I can chat with my Windows Live Messenger buddies from my Xbox 360, or download and watch hi-def movies on my game console.
Now Microsoft plans to extend that with a patent that proposes integrating instant messaging and television to create a social experience. Of course, the instant messaging system would connect you to your friends, but it could also track what shows you watch and share your interests with them. People could also use the system to remotely view or control their media devices, instructing their DVR to record a TV show from work, for example.
I’m sure some people will be leary of Microsoft (or anyone else) tracking their viewing habits, but I like the idea. I can already share what music I listen to using Windows Live Messenger, and my friends know they can track my favorites on Last.fm. And while I like the idea of providing better remote control over my media devices, I really like the idea of making TV viewing a shared, social experience.
