For those of you that don’t know, Miranda is an interoperable client. Miranda has loads of plugins including quite a few media. Miranda doesn’t support skinning, but if you don’t mind the simple interface you’ll appreciate this since it’s really slim and fast.
Last week they released version 0.3 with tonnes of fixes and new features. It’s looking like a good alternative to Trillian Pro now (my favorite client), and hopefully the competition will get them both innovating. In particular, I thought you all might be interested in Miranda’s new roadmap for the next big version, 1.0.
A total rewrite sounds interesting, and I guess if they need it to do things like metacontacts and skins then it’s for the best. But winamp3 and netscape6 happened like this, and look what happened to those…

August 6, 2003 at 9:11 pm #60446AnonymousParticipantI downloaded Miranda last night, and played around with the plugins and such. It seemed to be a great client for those of you who use mulitple Chat Clients. I Have also have trillian pro, and Miranda has more options, customizations, plugins, and best of all its free.

As I said, im new at Miranda, and I have even payed for Trillian to get the multisupport. This seems much better.
Here is an image of my customized client, after only 1 day of use!

i imagine we only need to download the installer .exe file. at least thats what i’m doing (i’ll let you know if i’m wrong)… the zip file is just so the file is smaller, maybe if you’re strapped for space, although i dont imagine how that little bit of a difference would matter. the source code is only if you have any sort of need to view the source. most people would be utterly lost looking at the source to even a simple web page, so the source to a program like this would be mind-boggling.

August 16, 2003 at 8:03 am #60442BrianMemberI have tried Miranda once again, I still like it bit not enough to convince it is better than GAIM and Trillian. I still don’t understand why there are so many patches to download?
What I notice is that you can add your ICQ number by logging in AIM and several old numbers showed up again that I hadn’t seen in about two years.

My major problem was the Yahoo plugin is in serious need of updating, and with the recent news of Yahoo stopping YMSG9 support the Yahoo plugin may become defunct (I have never sniffed Miranda so am not 100% on what version of YMSG it uses). On the bright side, since Miranda is plug in based and most plug ins aer coded by third parties, it is always upto date with the latest protocol versions and changes (except for Yahoo). Another good thing is that a lot about miranda is open source so people can build on other peoples code.
