ParticipantI’m finding that alerts are only working intermittently in WLM. Sometimes I get mail and an alert pops up with a sound, sometimes not. Same when people sign in and when they type a message. Sometimes it works and alerts me, sometimes it doesn’t.
Has anybody else had this problem? Does anyone know of a possible fix? I have the latest version of WLM installed and my system is spyware and virus free.
I think that even though it’s out of Beta, WLM is still full of bugs. Half the time I’m unable to send offline messages. At least ordinary Windows Messenger doesn’t have these problems.

ParticipantAbout the sound problem, have a look here:

ParticipantThanks but that posting seems to apply to the old MSN Messenger V 7.5 and the problem I am having is with Windows Live Messenger.
If it’s any help I uninstalled the first Non Beta build of Windows Live Messenger and reinstalled it. That didn’t solve the problem. Since then I have installed the second Non Beta version 8.0.0792.00. At no point did I uninstall the Windows Live Sign In Assistant.
When I come to look in my program files I see a file called MSN Messenger and two other files called MSN Messenger (2) and MSN Messenger (3). Both (2) and (3) appear to contain sound files but WLM appears to get its sounds from the first file ie MSN Messenger. Certainly that appears to be the case when I checked in Tools.
Also the problem appears to be intermittent, with no pattern to it. It may or may not be relevant but Offline Messages sometimes bounce too. All in all it’s nowhere near as reliable as MSN Messenger V 7.5.
I should say that PC is spyware and virus free and other programs and internet browsing work fine.
I’ve given as much information as I can, I hope you guys can help me out.

For example a friend signed in tonight, it made no sound when she came online or for her first message, but then everything was fine.
I have scanned the thread and it really does seem to apply to people who lost sound from MSN Messenger 7.5 unless I am misreading it.
I got a reply from MSN…the sum total of their expertise was….”Alan, in order to receive alerts when contacts come online, you receive a message etc. you have to turn the alerts on”….. Brilliant! A masterstroke! Why didn’t I think of that?! Please excuse my sarcasm. I may not be a techie but even I can work out the sounds have to be turned on!
So I’m lost really, only I seem to be reporting these problems. Could you maybe spell it out in laymans terms what I need to do to fix it or what you think the problem is? As I said, I’m not a techie but if it’s clearly laid out I can follow instructions to correct whatever is wrong.

MemberI have the same problem. As Alanyork said the linked topic is not relevant because it deals with MSN Messenger 7.5 and the problem of missing sounds is with Windows Live Messenger (8.0.0792 is the one I use). In fact I have the same problem in the configuration window, when I select the contact signin alert and I hit on the play button 10 times, it only plays 1 time. For new messages on 10 tries it plays 3 times. It is the same when the alert should be emitted, for example when I receive a new instant message, it plays the alert sound sometimes but not always, which is very annoying.
I would precise that I never installed a beta version of WLM nor MSN Messenger and I did not uninstall WLM except to reinstall it to try make the alert sounds always work.

MemberI answer to myself, it seems that it is winamp which cause the problem, it seems to work correctly if the music is not playing (but as I always have the music it never works).
To be more precise it is the directsound output module which cause trouble. As not every one as the problem but many may use this output module, it may be caused by the soundcard driver… it won’t be easy to fix :sJuly 13, 2006 at 7:39 am #146846CDr
MemberFirst solution is to use another output module, another one is to disable hardware acceleration.
For information I have a soundblaster live. -
