If you go to AIMthings.com they provide a 6 mb missing files package wich installs most of the files required to run user made AIM programs. Well i installed this and uninstalled it. One of the Dll’s it installed is required to run explorer. (not IE the actual windows explorer) Once i uninstalled the package it deleted the DLL. When you login to windows missing this file u will get a missing DLL warning and your desktop will not load (only the background will)
I had to go on my other computer, get file, put it on my flash card, plug it into my USB, run task manager, go to run, go through several missing file warnings, go to browse for program, went to the flash card reader, copied the program, pasted it in system32 folder.
The first time i used this awhile back it didnt do this, so im guessing the program isnt consistent
I do not suggest using this.

A visual basic programmer would use that control to write an application to connect to the AIM network. When he distributed the application he would need to supply the user with that file in order for it to run. The only reason you would get a missing file for it was if you were using an AIM client written in VB and the developer did not include the active x controls with it. It is much like dll-hell.
About the Explorer error, I am not sure that this is entirely possible. To my knowledge, no explorer dll could be over written while explorer is running. Another thing that puzzles me is why there was a dll file in there. I downloaded a similar (maybe same package, to use in VB) that did not include any DLL file.

And I also found that the install does install the DLL. See shizna, its one of those things were it says some files could not be deleted, and you need to restart windows, So it deletes it after explorer is shutdown, im guessing. And your right, most programs only use active x controls, but some dont.
