I tried to download MSN Messenger 5.0, but when I did, 2 error messages appeared. Here is what they said
“A Device attached to the system is no functionin”
and then this…
“The MSNMSGR.EXE file is linked to missing export OLEAUT32.DLL-314.”
I do not know what to do. I tried downloading Version 4.6, but it just took me to the 5.0 setup, even though I had 5.0 uninstalled. I went to settings/ control panel to uninstall it to make sure I got it all, but it still took me to v 5.0 setup. Can anyone help me:confused:
November 28, 2002 at 10:31 am #66047OpTiMiStMemberohh ..i think u didn`t delete messsenger from c:/program folder…
1st uninstall MSNMSGR.EXE completly..then delete internet downloading and temeprary files…
if doesn`t success…then find MSNMSGR5.0.EXE and then delete it..
i hope u can install 4.6 again …:DNovember 28, 2002 at 1:48 pm #66044rustedtightMemberOptimist,
I’m not convinced your fix will solve this.
The problem here… as its clearly indicated….. is that OLEAUT32.DLL is missing, until its re-installed then MSM Messenger n quite a few other programs will not run.
The 2 msnmsgr.exe’s you mention are not to blame.
This then leaves the problem of the non functioning device or attachment.erhenbrown,
Possibly, deleting the file MSNMSGR.EXE will stop the error bellowQuote:quote:”The MSNMSGR.EXE file is linked to missing export OLEAUT32.DLL-314.”However OLEAUT32.DLL by the fact that it is missing MAY be responsible for…….
Quote:quote: “A Device attached to the system is no functionin”Use Google and search for this DLL, you will be directed to an .exe related to drivers MS Visual Basic (VB), take it, install it. reboot n try again. You have 2 problems here n need to address each seperately.

got it and tell me the result…January 4, 2003 at 8:06 pm #66052DuplexMemberMy mother recently had this happen to her as well. I’ve checked the error messages, and they match up exactly. As I have no real experience with windows application programming or DLLs, I can only use my own programming experience to assume that OLEAUT32.DLL:314 is a command or line reference within that DLL. The DLL is not missing…it exists in the the windows/system directory, just where it would be expected.
I admit, my first reaction was to say “Hmm, must be a missing DLL, deleted when mom accidentally uninstalled MSN Messenger, not knowing what it was.” So I found the dll online and d/led it, but when I went to extract the dll file, I realized that it already existed. Some other windows programs use it as well. Since they haven’t turned up any errors during its use, I can only assume that the error is with MSNMSGR.EXE instead.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, to no avail. The same error messages appear upon any attempts to execute MSN Messenger, and after the error windows have been closed, MSNMSGR.EXE continues to appear in the task manager (not in the system tray, however).
I’m going to email MSN about this error. If I find any useful information, I’ll post it here.
January 4, 2003 at 8:12 pm #66054MacLaren2MemberI’m getting the same 2 errors with MSN 5.0. Only thing is, I have the oleaut32.dll file…3 different ones with the same name. So installing this .dll won’t help much ’cause I’ve already got it in theory…any other suggestions or resources for finding an answwer?
Thanks.
Craig PattersonJanuary 4, 2003 at 11:24 pm #66050DJHyperbyteMemberThe error “The MSNMSGR.EXE file is linked to missing export OLEAUT32.DLL-314.” occurs most likely for the following reason:
The MSN Messenger setup program installs a few DLL files, if proper versions are not already on your system. The error occurs because, during the setup process, MSN needs to replace a DLL file, which requires a version of OLEAUT32.DLL that is newer than what comes with your Windows version. Unfortunately, the old OLEAUT32.DLL is always locked and thus can only be replaced after your system is restarted. Replace the OLEAUT32.DLL by a newer one manually.

January 5, 2003 at 6:27 pm #66053MacLaren2MemberI tried to download oleaut32.dll from the links posted above…but they were dead links…and which version should I get? Presumably the one with the most current date?
Thanks…

No, do NOT just get the newest one.
You need one that is compatible with your version of Windows. Post your version (and service packs please) of Windows that you’re running now, and the version of OLEAUT32.DLL you have now, and I’ll have a look around for you, ok? 🙂
January 6, 2003 at 4:57 am #66055MacLaren2Memberoleaut32.dll 585kb. Win98, no service packs that I am aware of aftre initial installation. Hopefully we can get this figured out…thanks. 🙂
January 8, 2003 at 3:43 pm #66045urxlncMemberHey Just to ask all who have problems installing MSN 5, are you saving the file on the computer and trying to install? If yes, then don’t download the setup, run it from it current location, if you are using any download managers then disable them before trying to install/run from the location.

As advised on 11:28:02 this is a vb runtime and will install and correctly register the dll, simply d’loading the dll and placing it on the computer will be inefective. I’m surprised you still have this problem.February 3, 2003 at 8:16 pm #66057dutchyMemberI’ve got a problem.
When I try to delete Oleaut32.dll, they say: Can not delete Oleaut32.dll, because it is just by windows.
I hope you can help me. Please try to keep youre languages very easy, beause I really come from Holland (When I make mistakes in my languages, i’m sorry)
February 4, 2003 at 10:39 pm #66056dutchyMemberI’m sorry, the comp says used and not just –> because it is used by windows.
