MemberI had a topic about my computer freezing a while back, and I have no idea where it is now, so I’ll make another one.
As of late, my computer has been freezing up even more frequently than before. It happens pretty much whenever I try to watch a video, or play a somewhat graphics-intensive game (occasionally Flash movies/games as well). Other than that, I can do anything without it freezing up (like browse the internet, play music, run any of my programs, view pictures, etc.)
I tried doing several things such as;
- replacing the CPU fan (I have a Vantec TMD Aeroflow on now)
- moving the computer to a cooler location
- leaving the side panel off
- not overclocking (CPU is a P4 3.2)
- probably some other things
I also don’t know if it’s a problem with the video card. I don’t have onboard video or another video card to test that. The one I have now is old though, a GeForce4.
If any more info or specs are needed, I can post them. I really appreciate any help I can get.

Memberif you run a live-cd like kanotix does it freeze up with the live-cd?

ParticipantCheck the power supply, specifically how much power is on the 12v rail, if you don’t have enough your system can hang. This was the problem I had with my last PSU (But then, I do have 4 disks, 2 CDROMs and a PCIX buss)

MemberMy PSU has 18A on +12V, and max is 450W.
And I tried running a video with a SLAX liveCD, and it didn’t freeze up. I only tried it once though, and there was no sound (or internet for that matter either, but I’m pretty sure that’s not important).

Memberif linux doesn’t freeze the problem is either with windows, or maybe your sound card if you had no sound.
For A) backup all your stuff that’s important to you and do a format and reinstall, then everything should be good again
if B) get a new sound cardAugust 9, 2005 at 9:52 pm #127279Hurricane22491
MemberOh, there’s nothing wrong with my sound, I just didn’t have it configured at that time.
I’ll try watching a few more videos to see if it freezes, and if not, I’ll try reinstalling.

ParticipantDoes your video chipset allow you to check it’s core temperature? If so you may want to try to monitor that while watching a movie, if it spikes rapidly and the system hangs, the problem may lie in the video card.

MemberNot that I know of. It’s an old NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420 that I ripped out of my old computer from 2000/01. It’s a small card with only a heatsink (aluminum, I think). There’s a program called “NVIDIA settings” in the Taskbar, but I don’t see anything about temperature.
Again, I appreciate the help David and EEDOK.
I just got an email from Newegg about video cards… hmm..

MemberYep, I’ve done all of that. It hasn’t happened in a while (at least a few months, I think) though, so it’s all good, I guess. However, it doesn’t make me stop wondering what caused it in the first place. Oh well.
