In the spirit of wellness, I’m moving to FRANCE in 2026! I’ll be relocating to the city of Dijon in the Burgogne region. This is a city of 160,000 that is not a major tourist destination, but still rich with culture, history, museums and (of course) good food and wine.
This is one of my biggest adventures yet, requiring pulling up roots, purging my belongings, and even learning an entirely new language.
BUT… it also means moving from retirement (small “r”) to Retirement with a capital R. I’ll be dialing back the work and spending more time enjoying day-to-day life.
Why Dijon? Lots of reasons.
The size of the city feels right. There are two universities fueling and active culture and events calendar. It’s small enough to be walkable, with ‘centre-ville’ including numerous pedestrian-only streets. And it’s big enough to have an Apple Store and an IKEA.
There is a small English-speaking expat community, but we expect that learning French will be a requirement to really integrate.
The location is great, with both the high-speed rail and regional trains connecting in town, making exploring throughout France and Europe pretty easy (well, WAY easier than from Oregon).
It’s close to the Alps. Switzerland is just a couple hours away. So I’m already thinking about hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc.
It’s the next big chapter in my life. And my hope is that it will lead to more peace of mind and a better overall quality of life.
