Hi Folks…stupid problem here. Was running MSN 4.7 until few weeks ago, until friend told me about the 6.1 upgrade. So I upgraded. But now, when I connect to the internet, both MSN 4.7 and 6.1 start up and create two seperate icons on the task bar. Both run independantly (in other words, logging off one means the other is still logged in).
I thought that when you install a newer version of software, it automatically updates the older version, but now I have a ‘Messenger’ folder and ‘MSN Messenger’ folder in my ‘program’ folder. I can’t delete the old ‘messenger’ folder as it states that a programme is using it (even though I have closed down MSN 4.7 and closed down every other programme on the computer).
Damn, can anyone help me here as this is really, really annoying?
Thanks,
Luke Ray
Do you mean Windows Messenger 4.7, which comes embedded with Windows XP?
if yes, there are two options,
Option 1 – Do not load on startup, but keep on computer
In MSMGS:
Tools>Options>Preferences>and deselect “Run this program when windows starts”
If this doesn’t work,
1 Start>run
2 type MSconfig
3 startup
4 deselect MSMSGS “C:program filesmessengermsmsgs.exe” /background
Option 2: Total Annihalation
1. Click on the Start button and select Run.
2. Type: RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%INFmsmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
However I heave heard that this slows down Outlook Express, although I believe it can be fixed via Regedit.
i. open regedit
ii. edit>find
iii. type FB7199AB-79BF-11D2-8D94-0000F875C541 in “Find what” box
iv. two values will be found. Right click, click modify, and delete the text(“{FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541}”) found in the Value Data box for both of them.
