November 1, 2002 at 7:05 am #99739AnnaParticipantWhat exactly happens? Does it give you a ‘couldn’t connect’ message? Or something like ‘invalid username or password’? What kind of internet connection do you have?
November 1, 2002 at 8:15 am #99744PhilMembermaybe its just a coincidence…they have been running maintenance on messenger a few times recently…
November 1, 2002 at 11:53 am #99740cindyMemberhi i use windows xp broadband connection no prob on msn5.0
i know lots use 56 modem i dont believe xp is more compatible than windows 98 as a rule its always 98 more compatible than xpNovember 1, 2002 at 10:29 pm #99741magistykMemberWindows XP can be made to be compatible with almost ANYTHING. There is a feature in Windows XP where you can make the program you are trying to run think that it is running on Windows 98, or even 95, I believe.

November 2, 2002 at 8:49 am #99743PhilMemberyes, i get that too….often or not its because the server is too busy…i usually get this problem on sunday nights for me, which are sunday afternoons for america…so a lot of people are using the messenger….other times, microsoft are running maintenance. When you get the message saying “you are not connected to the internet”, click help and it will take you to a site showing the status of msn messenger, and sometimes it says its running routine maintenance…..i no you’re probably thinkin “why would it tell my i’m not connected to the internet”…i don’t know the answer to that, it tells me that too, even tho i no i am connected!!
November 2, 2002 at 8:09 pm #99748NotRustedMemberi had the same problem with my MSN 5 when i first downloaded it… but it doesnt give me the problem now. Seems that it was MSN servers that were creating the problem.

November 3, 2002 at 4:52 am #99738AnnaParticipantWell then perhaps it may be a memory problem. (not you – your ‘puter. ;)).
I take it the program stops responding? How much RAM do you have?November 3, 2002 at 8:18 am #99746BlugirLMemberQuote:quote:Originally posted by windaphonerWell then perhaps it may be a memory problem. (not you – your ‘puter. ;)).
I take it the program stops responding? How much RAM do you have?I have 256 meg of ram.

signing in is the problemNovember 3, 2002 at 8:44 am #99737Jeff HesterKeymasterHave you tried logging in with a different account, or logging into a different computer with the same account? That might help you figure out whether the problem is a computer configuration problem or an account problem.
November 15, 2002 at 10:39 pm #99742BlueGurlOneMemberHello!!..I have kinda the same prob., you see, I downloaded MSN mesenger 5.0 but when i tried to sign in it freazes and the two msn cartoons, stop spining around…and i have to restart my pc, is this sum kind of memory prob, I’m using win2000:D
November 15, 2002 at 11:19 pm #99736Jeff HesterKeymasterDid you download the correct version? They have three versions of MSN Messenger: one for XP, one for Me or 98, and one for NT4 or Win2000.
December 18, 2002 at 8:04 pm #99749samikmeilMemberI was having the same problem. And I look on the internet no one have the solution.
After that I checked the registry and I found the problemGo to Start > Run> and type> regedit
Then go to
My computer >HkEY_CURREENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>MessengerServiceAnd check the Key “Server” you will find messenger.hotmail.com;255.255.255.255:1863
it must be like that messenger.hotmail.com;207.46.104.20:1863
