ParticipantJaredkortje, I looked up the error code from Microsoft here, and it states :
ERROR_INSTALL_SERVICE_FAILURE – 1601 – The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. Contact your support personnel to verify that the Windows Installer service is properly registered.I think if you install the Windows Installer Update it should fix this problem.

I got windows XP familial edition and i got the error 1601 when i try to install msn6 i tried the update of windows installer i tried download msn 6 from various places (and of course from microsoft) i tried to open it with windows 2000 compatibility (i’m not very good in computering) i found no solution which success so i leave a message here hoping someone will help me. Or i will be patient and wait for the final version.
Thank you.

MemberI am in need of some help with a similar problem to the two people above. I am an IT person at a doctor’s office and received one of the monthly updates for our network from Microsoft. Included was MSN 6, we had only 5.1 before. I obviously updated and since I have gotten the 1601 error with any MS Office program. This is disasterous as I was about to launch our new website. Our network in Windows 2000 and Office 2000 Professional. I have tried every measure Microsoft has offered and now I look like an idiot for not being able to clear this up. Any immediate help would greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance,

MemberWarda,
I had the same problem… Here is how I solved it. I did a System Restore… First go back a week…… If it still gives you the error, then go back a month. But remember that if you installed any other programs after your restore date you will have to reinstall them.
System Restore is located on Programs, Accessories, System Tools and is easy..
Hope this works

MemberMeillin thanks for you reply, but i havn’t to do it (happily because it frighten me the system restore i’m not good at computering). After many and many attemps i succed in installing the msn6 but i dont know how. i’ve tried many things that i found on several forums: the windows installer update (i had a message telling me it had failed), i tried the msn ad-remover, i tried to install other compatibility (changing the compatibility in the properties), i’ve tried download from several places… and one evening i’ve tried again without believe in it and it works i’ve succeed i don’t know how because all i done failed i saw it in the box messages i wonder how it worked but the essential: it works.
So i thank you Meillin i hope your solution will work for jaredkortje and networker… bybye and thanksJuly 27, 2003 at 3:41 am #61187derek_kool

I’ve tried this method, but it doesn’t work, and I don’t really see how this would help, sorry.
I’m using windows XP home edition. Does anybody know where to go from here? I’ve tried the Windows Installer update but the OS is not compatible with my computer. Sorry I’m not really good with computers, can someone please find the correct Windows Installer Update for my computer?
I’ve also tried this solution proposed by Brian(2nd post from top) but i’m not sure how it works:
https://bigblueball.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3843&SearchTerms=error,1601Quote:quote:If so, try going to your Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services >> Windows Installer, right click and choose “Start”. Then rerun setup. If XP Home doesn’t have “Services” in its Control Panel, try typing “Services.msc” at the run or command prompt. But when I try it, it closes on me. It says “error 3: system cannot find the specific path, and I am unable to change the directory to where I saved the MSN messenger 6.0 xp installation file. Is there a way to change the directory, because I can’t delete any of the letters. Can someone please help me with this? Your help and time is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I’m sorry this still gives me Error 1601. And how does doing a system restore get rid of the Error 1601 problem? MSN messenger 6 was never installed to my comp in the first place. Could my computer benefit from popping in the Windows XP CD and reinstalling the Windows Installer? Would my hard drive be wiped out? Anyone’s help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
