MSN Audio Conversation

Hey! My Uncle In-Law, (is that a word?), installed a router, (an SMC so maybe this will not work for you), and he could not use his audio over MSN. It had to be the router, because before we installed the router MSN audio worked perfectly.

Somehow this became my problem! So after 3 days of going to his house after work, and 4 days of research I found the answer to his problem.

I tried to open all the ports the SMC help section said to do, if that did not work try these, and finally go DMZ. None of these solutions worked, still no voice.

Long boring story over with; the solution was to make sure the Universal Plug N Play, (UPnP), option was enabled on the router, and to make sure it was enabled on the operating system as well, (which is XP in this case). UPnP is not install by default on XP, this is an option you have to choose, (there were security issues before with it).

Step 1; Access your router setup page, locate the UPnP option, enable it.
Step 2; Go to CONTROL PANEL, click ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS, click ADD/REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS, click NETWORKING SERVICES, click DETAILS, tick box UNIVERSAL PLUG AND PLUG, click OK.

I have no clue if this will work with all routers, (I have a Linksys and I do not use MSN Messenger), but this solved the voice problem with a SMC router running XP.

This was an easy solution to the problem, the SMC help section was useless, and hard to understand. I think the average Joe should write manuals, instead of the people who designed the product and know what is going on. It is just “The Man” trying to keep us down!
