Hi,
I’ve been seeing one of my contacts come online sporadically over the past month or two, but they don’t ever actually knowingly log into MSN messenger. It looks to be one of the older versions that comes up, since I can’t ever see a display pic, but I’m pretty sure that the old versions have all been removed. In fact, I think the first thing we tried was putting a new version on and removing the old one through add/remove programs. The little messenger icon doesn’t appear on the right of the taskbar, so they can’t get into the options. Not in any way I know of, at least. Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep it from doing this? Might be a while before I can try anything, but anything anyone can offer’d be appreciated.Thanks.
Are you sure its signing in from their computer? If so, Its probably Windows Messenger and not MSN Messenger thats signing them in, not to be confused with Windows Live Messenger. :S
I tend to agree with MattB since when you update WLM, older versions are replaced with the newer onw…except when you’re using beta. In that case, the only solution I’ve found is to go to add/remove programs, delete the beta version, the then install the public build. So in all liklihood, from what you’ve said you tried, it’s not some rogue version of WLM signing in randomly.
Windows Messenger could be the culprit. You said it’s sporadic. Does it perhaps happen only when the computer is rebooted? Or is there any pattern to when it seems to occur?
You certainly should check the login options in Windows Messenger as a first step. You could also send a msg to the contact when it happens. When the contacts opens the msg to respond it should be clear which program it’s actually coming from & then you can thake the appropriate steps to correct it.

I’m pretty sure it isn’t live messenger. Far as I can tell, it’s the version that comes packaged with windows XP, is it… msn messenger 4 or 5? The version that doesn’t allow you to have a display picture, at least. I’ll have to check, it’s just that the only time I’ve never seen an image, not even one of the stock images (the rocket, etc) is when someone’s been on one of the old messengers. Since that version’s been removed, there isn’t any obvious way to open it up and access any options, they only ever know they’ve logged in when they get an IM. I’m not entirely certain if it happens whenever the computer’s logged on. I wouldn’t have thought so, seems like they’re online once every couple of weeks, but I don’t live in the same country, so I can only ask whenever the problem occurs. Still, looks pretty clear that I’m not going to be able to fathom anything out until I get a version number. Thanks for everything so far, though.
The version installed on XP standardly is WINDOWS messenger, which is easily confused with WLM. You can have both on your computer at the same time and they can both be run, although not under the same user at the same time. Windows Messenger DOES NOT show under Add/Remove programs. If your contact goes to Programs from the Start Menu he/she will likely see both Windows Messenger AND Windows Live Messenger listed.
It sounds like what you’re dealing with is Windows Messenger and not WLM. I have a contact who sometimes resorts to Windows Messenger when WLM is not playing nice for him, and it is true he has no display picture when this happens. Your contact should be able to check for it from the programs menu.
Try asking your contact to look for the Windows Messenger program, open it, and double check the login settings. Hope that helps a little.
