MemberSorry, some *really* novice questions here, but I can’t find clear answers on the FAQs or even on MS’s sites…
Q1. True or False? To use MSN Messenger you have to have an e-mail address ending in @msn.com, @hotmail.com or @passport.com
Sort of related: My nephew asked to join my list of Messenger contacts. I accepted of course, but I notice that HIS e-mail address ends in @lineone.net or something similar. So what’s going on here? Can he still use MSN Messenger??
Q2. Can anybody explain the differences between the three types of account mentioned above? (msn – passport – hotmail) Is one type of account preferable to or better than the others in any way?
Thanks

Participanthi, thats not the first time this question is asked ….
you can use any email address on use MSN Messenger but for that you have to sign up that email on http://www.passport.com and then that email will be valid for the use on MSN Messenger, there is not a HUGE difference between the three accounts, and they all can be used on MSN Messenger ! I Hope you got your answer ! :rolleyes:May 12, 2004 at 2:43 pm #45234detn8r
Participant@hotmail and @msn.com emails are all associated with hotmail.com. When you register for these emails, you are automatically signed up for a .NET passport. Emails like @linone.com must be manually registered as a .NET passport. You can register one at http://www.passport.com.
There is no “better” email to choose from here, only because you are only using the email to connect to the client. So the choice is up to you. If you have an email you use like a company one, or an ISP one that your contacts, or family members etc already know you by, it’s probably better to use that, rather than making a new email address just to use Messenger from hotmail.com.May 12, 2004 at 2:51 pm #45240aLee

Participantdetn8r – I hadn’t realised this was possible… just to clarify – are you saying that any email address at all can be registered as a MSN Passport account, and thus have exactly the same MSN Messenger access as a proprietary Microsoft account such a i]me@hotmail.com[/i?
So i]me@bigcompany.com[/i with no access outside the corporate LAN (but internet access for IM), i]me@ISPprovider.com[/i as a free POP3 or IMAP account, and i]me@otherIMprovider.com[/i such as Yahoo could all use MSN messenger? Or am I misunderstanding?

ParticipantYes, any email address can be used. (as long as you have access to your inbox) Also, a note: if you are trying to register a passport with an invalid email address (ex: iamSoSexy@beast.com) where as this email is fake, you will not be able to alter your nickname with in the client. (but that’s besides the point)
In the end, no matter what email address you use, whether it be a yahoo.com, isp.com, or comany.com email, they all act in the same way. MSN activates immediate access to .NET services with hotmail.com emails when your register with them. Just another way to have hotmail services grow.
Another note: when registering, pay attention to the emails MSN sends you. One will be an introductory email, and another will be a validating one. Make sure you validate it. 😉
Sometimes if you have a spam, or junk mail folder, it will end up in there, so keep an eye open.May 20, 2004 at 6:46 am #45239mjc2002
MemberIt all sounds very easy in THEORY, but I suspect the PRACTICE is very different. I’ve been trying for a week now – more out of curiosity than any real need – to register with an e-mail that does NOT end in @passport.com, @hotmail.com or @msn.com.
For instance, I try going to the Passport registration site, as suggested by one of you:
http://www.passport.comThis redirects me immediately to:
http://www.passport.net/Consumer/default.asp?lc=1033&lc=1033And, there you’ll see that they insist that my e-mail address must end in @passport.com:
Sign in … @passport.comInvestigating a little further, I saw that I can add an alternative e-mail address (one of the options on the right of the page). So I entered an alternative e-mail address “successfully”, with the intention later of swapping the two addresses. Well, I didn’t even get that far because my alternative e-mail address hasn’t been accepted… (Even though I received a message saying that they would send details to this address of how to proceed)
Is there ANYBODY among you who has successfully registered a non-passport/msn/hotmail address? (less theory and more reality please!)
And if so, what’s the trick? After all, surely a lot of you who are reading this have work e-mail addresses (like me) and would prefer to have everything integrated in one handy e-mail address??
Cheers

Memberclick on this link
https://register.passport.net/reg.srf?lc=1033&id=486&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Epassport%2Enet%2FConsumer%2Fdefault%2Easp%3Flc%3D1033&sl=1
this will take you to the page where you can enter your emali that you want to associate with passport site..simply do that and watch out for validating email to arrive in your account see bulk junk or other folder where it can lie apart from inbox…those can be 2 emails or one but it doesnt matter just read them carefully and click on the link they provide you with, to validate your passport..and once it is done you can use your email for passport sites and MSN messenger..May 20, 2004 at 2:36 pm #45238mjc2002
MemberThanks – this sounds promising. However, if I follow your link, I get a message that I have to “enable cookies” in my Internet browser – which is utter nonsense since I’ve set my browser, wisely or wrongly, to “Accept all cookies”.
Any ideas of how to get round this one?
These guys in MS have got it all worked out haven’t they!

MemberGo to
http://www.passport.net/
there you should see a big tab on the right side of the page which says ” Register for your free .NET passport today!” clicking it would take you to the page I mentioned earlier. There you should input your email password and all, click next and wait for that email and when you answer that validate email that they send you on your email add you put there, you will have a your new passport account ready to use.May 23, 2004 at 3:51 am #45243sammysgrrl
MemberAre msn.com and passport.net e-mails now only for those who are MSN subscribers?
May 23, 2004 at 1:33 pm #45229Jeff Hester
KeymasterNo they aren’t. I’m not subscribed to anything and I got to do it. Just fill all the info they ask you and then check the email you used to sign up for the email account. For example you wanted to use “JoeSmoe@yahoo.com” but you used another email like “Joe@aol.com” to register it then you would check your aol email and follow the instructions there so that you can use the yahoo account. It’s pretty simple actually. Just do what they tell you.

Huh? What about Yahoo?
@passport.com isn’t a real email address. They just used passport.com as an example of a passport that YOU create from http://www.passport.com. 😉
