I have installed MSN Messenger on a new laptop.all works fine, setting up contacts etc, except I can’t change my display name, the text box is greyed out. I have installed the same version on three other PCs with no Problems.

Although you have stated installing the same version on 3 different computers, you provide little detail.
There are tons of questions that need answering…so I guess I’ll start with..
What is your email’s domain name? @hotmail.com? @gmail.com ? anything but @hotmail.com?
Specifications of the computer…
Tried downgrading? Tried installing one of those dodgy beta leaks out there?
Have exactly the same problem, except it is with different XP users on the same computer – at home (so in theory identical copies of software)..
Have tried all sorts of permutations, on one user have been able to set up two MSN passports, and connect to messenger with both, both verify account and change user name… on another user with a limited XP account, again tried two separate attempts, but unable to verify and the name display area is greyed out…, and on yet a further user, (this time another XP computer administrator account) have been able to verify the user, but still the name area is greyed out….For all the net passport users I have set up, I can happily log on to the passport site, so they all exist… (NB NONE are hotmail, all are using different email addresses)
Have searched the web and lots of people have seemed to mention having this problem, but no fixes listed…

Thanks, Lamb.Right, try and re-verify your email, click on File -> Verify..or something like that – I haven’t used a non-MSFT email in a while.
