I am trying to download MSN Messenger,but the download process freezes up. I did an unistall and rerun 8.1 again and had the same problem. I rebooted my computer…than tried to sign in anyway and got error code 81000378…contact list is not available. I think I am having this problem becasue the download never finished.
Hi, and welcome to BBB. Try downloading WLM8.1 from here. This is the latest stable version.
This did not work it did not complete downloading. I was using the 8.0 but now its telling me that can no longer use it…have to upgrade…8.1 will not complete the download.
OK, do any error messages appear, or does the download just freeze up? Are you able to download other files without problems, into your computer? The more details you give, the easier it’ll be to troubleshoot the problem.
Which one is not completing? the auto-update download from Messenger or the link above which can be downloaded with your browser?
the built-in downloader in Messenger fails sometimes..
When it freezes up…do you get an error msg? If so – exactly what does it say?
Have to tried going to Control Panel/ Add Remove Programs…select WLM and then choose REPAIR?

The window messensger set up wizard will not complete….it starts and put an icon on my desk top but the processing just freezes up and does not allow you to cancel…have to reboot the system to get out. I was using the 8.0 but got a message to upgrade then I install 7.0820 and it worked but now it is telling me to upgrade again. The 8.1 is the one that wont complete the loading process

I have tried both and both will freesze up…will not complete the download process and end up have to reboot my computer

WLM does not even make on add remove programs list…only a white box on my desk top title WLM. The other versions were list but I did and unistall to run the 8.1

both I tried both ways and got the same results
Try downloading WLM8.1 from here. Because of the forced upgrade to 8.1 for millions of MSN users worldwide, problems downloading will be inevitable. Just be patient or if you can’t wait, I could email you the file, but it’s a humongous 17MB.
Sounds to me like you’ve got some component of WLM that didn’t uninstall completely. Whenever you use add/remove there are still files/folders/registry enteries etc. that remain on your machine. Usually they don’t cause to much trouble – but they have the potential to.
You may want to consider COMPLETELY wiping WLM from your machine and then trying a totally 100% clean install. If you want to consider this, please read the following thread https://bigblueball.com/forums/msn-windows-live-messenger-support/37628-those-you-experiencing-error-1603-problems.html
I am assuming you ARE able to download and install other programs that run an installation wizard and you have no problem doing that? If by some chance you’re having the same problem with anything else, then this is not the answer and we need to look further at what’s causing the problem. You could try downloading a spyware cleaner (something useful LOL) just to confirm before considering a total wipeout of WLM if you haven’t already confirmed this is an isolated problem.

-Doris-I can install all other versions except 8.1…but I am not allowed to use the other versions due to security problems. What I have done in the mean time …is I am signing in using the MSN Web Messenger sign in and everything is working that way.
By all means, try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility mentioned in this thread (same link as Doris’ post #12) but before you do, try this:
Click on Start > Run and type cmd. Press Enter. In the DOS window that opens, type cd:windowssystem32. Press Enter.
Type REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
Type REGSVR32 INITPKI.DLL You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
Type REGSVR32 MSSIP32.DLL You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
Type REGSVR32 wintrust.dll You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.Now try downloading and installing WLM8.1 again.
