Microsoft Corp. said Tuesday it had restored MSN Messenger service to all its customers after nearly a week of glitches that left about a third of its users disconnected or without access to their online personal address books.
IN A POSTING on its Web site Tuesday morning, Microsoft said, however, that “there is a very small percentage of people who have lost their contact list due to unforeseen circumstances in the data restoration process.”
The lingering outage caused analysts to speculate that Microsofts reputation and its customer base may be threatened.
“When you have a communications product that fundamentally is not communicating, people start migrating fairly rapidly and don’t come back,” said Rob Enderle, a research fellow with Giga Information Systems. “This might actually cripple the product.”
Microsoft product manager Bob Visse said less than 10 percent of users were still without service as recently as Monday. [Discuss]
