A proxy server is a sort of tunnel, between your web browser and a remote site. Proxyservers are often used in companies or schools/universities to get a lot of computers online on one Internet connection.
You are behind a proxyserver, or you are not. If you are behind a proxy (at your school or company, for example) then you need to make your internet connections go through this proxy. You can not simply bypass the proxy.
You can configure MSN Messenger to use a certain proxy server in the ‘Connection’ settings.
