MemberI personally don’t see why MSN is so popular, but I guess it may have something to do with M$ bundling Widnows Messenger with Windows.
I have compiled a vs list. Feel free to add more.MSN 🙁
Messages don’t always arrive, and when they don’t, you get notified about half an hour later 🙁
You can’t hide and send message at the same time
You can’t send messages to people, or see their details when you’re in offline mode.
You can’t leave messages for people who are offline
150 maximum number of contacts
Anyone can add you to their list
You know who’s added you to their list
Forced to see mailcheck message, even when you don’t use your hotmail account, and it’s probably getting completely spammed.MSN 🙂
Compact
Many UK users
MSN Nicks – But may be abused
Photo image in corner of window
Uses email addresses (but passport only) – easier to remember?ICQ 🙂
You know when messages have arrived, as the message onyl shows as sent when it’s been confirmed the user has received the message
Over last 6 years, been number one in Top 10 downloads from http://www.download.com
Free SMS with no signature (unreliable)
Fun multi-user chat module – letter by letter, sleep, wakeup sounds, away for x minutes
Advanced send – URLs, forwards, files, contacts, greeting cards
Multiplatform OS support
POP3 email checking, and preview without having to download to your computer. Can check multiple accounts
You can set a nickname to a user
Java versions for on-the-move
Hardly any downtime for maintenance (people always complaining about not being able to sign in to MSN)
No maximum numbers of users
Authorization needed before people can even add you to their list
You can invite a friend to ICQ, and be notified when they’ve signed up
For file transfers, you can set the speed of the transfer, and resume broken transfers. Can send multiple files at the same time.
You can contact people even if you’re not on their contact list, and they’re not on yours
Find friends – there is a directory for you to find people with similar interests, or ICQ users from your home town
Crash backup – if ICQ crashes, and you’ve not read a message that’s flashing on your screen, it shows the next time you log on
Icons to put onto webpages so visitors know when you’re online.
You can send messages when in invisible mode
You can set a list of people who can see you when you’re in invisible mode
You can set a detailed profile of yourself that can be accessed via the client and on a webpage
Loads of tweaks available! 🙂
Be notified of contacts’ birthdays
Contact AIM users (unreliable)
You can get ICQ to hide (like you can with the windows taskbar)
If someone is away, you know how long they’ve been away for.
Pager – Non ICQ users can contact you on ICQ by emailing your pager
Shared files
Comprehensive history loggingICQ 🙁
Porn messages, but blockable
Peer to peer, can’t use multiparty chat mode or send files easily when in proxies
Bulky, but should perform ok on most computers these days – Lite and Pro available
May be difficult to remember numbers
Not many UK usersMarch 29, 2004 at 8:50 pm #47340Crazy Penguin
Memberhmmm…
i have to say I think that many things which you think are problems with MSN I consider to be benefits, and many benefits of ICQ are now available with MSN plus:Problems with MSN
You can’t hide and send message at the same time- why would you want to do this, unless you want to be immature? (Okay I’M immature but I’m not THAT immature.)
You can’t send messages to people, or see their details when you’re in offline mode.- if your offline, that usually means you don’t want to send messages, or you could just log on.
You can’t leave messages for people who are offline- you can in messenger plus, or you could send them an email
Anyone can add you to their list-How is that a problem, if you don’t want someone to add you to their list just refuse permission when you get asked about it.
You know who’s added you to their list- again how is this a problemOver last 6 years, been number one in Top 10 downloads from http://www.download.com- And MSN is probably downloaded just as often,(though I can’t back that up in anyway), but off Microsoft’s website
Fun multi-user chat module – letter by letter, sleep, wakeup sounds, away for x minutes- available with plus
Advanced send – URLs, forwards, files, contacts, greeting cards- files can easily be sent with MSN
Multiplatform OS support- MSN is also available on several platforms
POP3 email checking, and preview without having to download to your computer.-available with plus
Can check multiple accounts-available with plus
You can set a nickname to a user-available with plus
No maximum numbers of users- I’m not aware of a maximum user limit for MSN
Authorization needed before people can even add you to their list- MSN has this
You can invite a friend to ICQ, and be notified when they’ve signed up – MSN has this
You can contact people even if you’re not on their contact list, and they’re not on yours- you can do this on MSN
Find friends – there is a directory for you to find people with similar interests, or ICQ users from your home town- you can do this on MSN
You can send messages when in invisible mode- why would you want to do this?
You can set a detailed profile of yourself that can be accessed via the client and on a webpage- you can do this on MSN
Loads of tweaks available! :)- lots of tweaks are available for MSN as well with the patches created on mess.be etc
Be notified of contacts’ birthdays- available on plus
Comprehensive history logging-available on plusSo most of the advantages of ICQ are also available with MSN plus, so I really don’t see your problem, also I’m sure that some other members will be able to come up with a list of good MSN features, I would but I cant be bothered right now….
Arrgggggggghhhhhhhh…. I’ve posted a long SERIOUS post, I mustn’t be feeling very well
OK VETS

Yes, but I was thinking more of when you’re disconnected from the internet.

Well if you don’t want people to talk to you why don’t you just block them? In fact why don’t you want to talk to them if they are on your contact list?

Yes, but I was thinking more of when you’re disconnected from the internet.
But it’s impossible to send a message to someone if you are disconnected from the internet, on any IM, as far as I know anyway, as I don’t actually have ICQ.

With Plus, you still have to be online. With ICQ, you can leave a message and go offline again.
Again just send them an email, it doesn’t take that long, and when the person comes online they will have a message.

How do you do that?
You can send any saved file using the send file option, as all the things you mention seem to be saved files, or text which you can copy into a message, I dont see why this is a problem.

True, but you implied that MSN does not support more than one platform, when it does.

I think it’s 150.
when you say users do you mean contacts? because yes there is a limit of 150 contacts, but users would refer to the number of people worldwide who can use messenger at the same time, and I don’t think there’s a limit on that, and if there is its a LOT higher than 150 ;).

Just go into the add contacts section, and add their email address to your contact list, and select the option to send an email to them. When they sign up to MSN, you will be aware of it.

To chat to someone not on your contact list, click start an IM conversation, and select the option other from the tab bars. Then type in the address of the person you want to speak to and a conversation will be started.to find friends, click on search for a contact and this will allow you to search for a contact through their interests/ names etc
to create a detailed profile go on tools/ options and click edit profile, this will let you create a profile with your interests, favourite quotes etc

how comprehensive do you need? The logs detail everything that takes place in the conversation.

Very well….
for a start the games available on MSN, allow you to play your contacts, who doesn’t enjoy a good game of tic tac toe every now and again? 😀Then theres the multi person convos, display pics, nicks, the ability to start audo convs, video conferencing, MSN also allows you to exchange ip’s quickly and easily in many games for online play (starting the game for you), plus all the extra features now availbale on plus, and the mods online, need I go on

Member> Well if you don’t want people to talk to you why don’t you just block them? In fact why don’t you want to talk to them if they are on your contact list?
Aw, come on, you make it seem like I don’t want to talk ANYTIME.
I think you’ve gone over the top here.> But it’s impossible to send a message to someone if you are disconnected from the internet, on any IM, as far as I know anyway, as I don’t actually have ICQ.
You’d better get it, then!
It just stores it until you go online, and sends immediately> Again just send them an email, it doesn’t take that long, and when the person comes online they will have a message.
Hassle. Compared to when I can just send an instant message.
I generally avoid using email if what I want to say is just a single sentence.> Actually I was wrong there, didn’t really read the topic properly, but I’m sure that some of these features are implemented in the various mods out there.
Bah! Addons! 🙂
> You can send any saved file using the send file option, as all the things you mention seem to be saved files, or text which you can copy into a message, I dont see why this is a problem.
Nah, contacts and greetings are not files.
Get ICQ and see what I mean.
I can compare because I’ve used both.> True, but you implied that MSN does not support more than one platform, when it does.
Fair enough comment.
> when you say users do you mean contacts? because yes there is a limit of 150 contacts, but users would refer to the number of people worldwide who can use messenger at the same time, and I don’t think there’s a limit on that, and if there is its a LOT higher than 150 ;).
Ah, ok.
> REALLY?? 🙂
No comment there, then?
(Just checking)> Just go into the add contacts section, and add their email address to your contact list, and select the option to send an email to them. When they sign up to MSN, you will be aware of it.
Ah, I get you. But that contact still enters your contact list, adding to the 150 limit. I’m not actually aware for sure that it does send an email (even though it says it does), so I’ll take your word for it.
> To chat to someone not on your contact list, click start an IM conversation, and select the option other from the tab bars. Then type in the address of the person you want to speak to and a conversation will be started.
You star.
> to find friends, click on search for a contact and this will allow you to search for a contact through their interests/ names etc
Is this in Windows Messenger? I can’t find it.
> to create a detailed profile go on tools/ options and click edit profile, this will let you create a profile with your interests, favourite quotes etc
It’s not very comprehensive, and it’s (annoyingly) web based.
I don’t think you can add simple details like a town, for example.> how comprehensive do you need? The logs detail everything that takes place in the conversation.
Dates of being added, dates of adding people, etc..
Keyword search facility for sent and received items.> Very well….
for a start the games available on MSN, allow you to play your contacts, who doesn’t enjoy a good game of tic tac toe every now and again? 😀That’s a bonus. Can you actually play against them?
I seem to remember a tacky game called bejewelled where you don’t actually play against each other, but you still need to find an opponent to start what is pretty much a one player game.> Then theres the multi person convos, display pics, nicks, the ability to start audo convs, video conferencing, MSN also allows you to exchange ip’s quickly and easily in many games for online play (starting the game for you), plus all the extra features now availbale on plus, and the mods online, need I go on
Multi person convos is pretty much a very basic version of ICQ Chat
Mentioned pictures
I’m sure video was available before MSN was even born, but I’m not certain. I don’t use it. Audio is ICQ phone.
Online play you’ve mentioned already
Extra features with mods… ADDONS! 🙂
Yes, you’ll definitely need to go on.April 9, 2004 at 7:18 pm #47335DoS
Memberits nice having such a topic, but I think everyone uses the program that comforts him. I use ICQ and I really think that icq is better than msn. lets say I use ICQ and all my friends are using MSN, then I would definatly switch to MSN over ICQ’s tools and all just to chat with my friends. I know alot of people using an IM just because most of there friends use the same IM, so you could say that they are stuck with this IM even if they dont like it much.
well one thing to add here in ICQ you can sign in with your ICQ# and if your ICQ# was tall and complicated you can sign in with your ICQ MAIL instead of your ICQ#.
Well I saw here that MSN is more popular, Nope Not more than ICQ. ICQ has way much more users than MSN you cant even compare. Plus that icq can message AIM buddies as well.
Some people think that MSN takes less memory than ICQ, well thats all wrong. if you check ull see that ICQ PRO takes less memory than MSN, and ICQ LITE takes half of that. MSN depends on MS Windows to make its product popular, so a newbie will see windows messenger in his pc even if doesnt know what is a IM.
Anyways nothing is perfect they both are good and they both have there bugs.
PS: In ICQ 4.0 LITE Beta you are able to add Animated Pics (Avetar) in your messege box as well as pics. Xtraz feature is released with this version as well, so you could use any addons or games from this feature without having to search for a third party Addon from the internet. it does almost everything.April 10, 2004 at 12:56 am #47332vinnielo
MemberQuote:quote:Originally posted by DoSIn ICQ 4.0 LITE Beta you are able to add Animated Pics (Avetar) in your messege box as well as pics.
Is this like what AOL/AIM has?
April 10, 2004 at 4:36 am #47336DoS
Membervinnielo yes exactly. You can add people from AIM, and see there avetar. they can do the same thing too
April 13, 2004 at 12:41 pm #47331vinnielo
MemberThere have been reports that the ICQ EmailExpress function is not working.
(Non ICQ user sending email to ICQ user’s contact list)
Just thought I’d mention this before I get attacked! 🙂
April 14, 2004 at 3:16 am #47330vinnielo
MemberICQ 🙂
You can see if someone is using ICQ without having to attempt to add them to your contact list. Also, this ICQ Xtraz that is being bundled into ICQ Lite allows you to play games with people on your contact list – something DoS failed to mention.
April 19, 2004 at 10:34 pm #47337Crazy Penguin
MemberAhhhh…. I can’t be bothered arguing anymore, I will concede that ICQ is probably as good as and may be better than MSN, but I don’t think the falws are as bad as you think, however until I get ICQ I will withhold my comments.
However I agee with DoS’s comment, choice of IM largly depends on what IM your contacts have.
Oh and I shall point out that MSN should nto be ocmpared iwth windows messenger, as this version is pretty horrendous, to truly experience MSN you should probably use the actaul MSN bversion as it seems to have much mroe features.
anyway… i’ll go away now….
