ParticipantHi everyone,
Firstly, I’d like to apologise for starting ANOTHER MSN Messenger 6.0 thread… but I’m sort of eager to get things sorted out.
As requested, I’m going to try and include more details to try to make your life easier if you decide to help me.
OS: Windows 98
ISP: ntl:home Broadband Internet (http://www.ntlhome.com/ntl_internet/get_broadband.asp)
Anti-Virus Measures: Kasperksky Anti-Virus after Norton was “destroyed” by a virus and now will not run on our machine. We also have PortICE, which is supposedly a firewall and, recently installed, ZoneAlarm (with MSN Messenger running as a “server”).
Ad-Aware 6.0 was installed and tests run yesterday afternoon after I read over these forums briefly (for your enjoyment, 764 files/folders were deleted as a result of the scan). When the problem started:
Thursday night was the first time I noticed that MSN was not working. I’ve known my internet connection/MSN to be temperemental things from past experience, so expected things to be OK the next day on my return from school.
Hotmail.com and MSN.com are also not accessible from my computer (they load for what seems like eons before appearing with the old, “This page cannot be displayed” message). What I’ve tried:
Everything! I’ve fiddled about with Proxy settings (I don’t have a clue what I’m doing…), uninstalled MSN 6.0, reinstalled it. Uninstalled again and tried an older version. Used my mother’s iBook to try and find answers on MSN.com’s help/status pages but couldn’t find anything of use.
Any and all help (if I was to be picky, step-by-step or equally simple instructions) would be warmly received. I’m sure NTL will sort it out some day, but I’m not confident in their customer services at all…So… Thanks in advance for all of your help. If fellow NTL sufferers feel like posting something like I have, feel free :).

ParticipantHi
i had problems too, its NTL that is having problems, r u from NW England, if so that is where the problem is hit hardest!
1- Goto http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/trancache.html#ntl
2- Find the name of a proxy near you [Eg. For me its cache1-mant.server.ntli.net, because im from Manchester]
3- Goto Internet Options in Internet Explorer, click the connections tab, and then click the Lan Settings button.
4- Check Automatically detect Settings.
5- Check Use Proxy Server.
6- Type in the address you found, and the port (NTL is port 8080).
I did this for NTL

Thanks for the advice. I’ll edit this post in a little bit with the results 😎
[Edit: Although the little green MSN men spun ’round for an eternity, it was all in vain. So I’ve now definately done the proxy thing without having any success.
Any more suggestions?]

Memberheya there, i had problems with NTL broadband, and i live in the manchester area
i got my msn and hotmail servers workin by following those instructions but not msn messenger,
any got NE1 got a way to help with getting MSN messenger working?also under the connections section in MSN messenger, what type of proxy do i choose? HTTP?, SOCKS 4 or 5???
September 8, 2003 at 9:27 pm #90727AM17
ParticipantYeah, I’m now in Skarenyx’s boat. Hotmail & MSN.com both work, but still no MSN through Microsoft’s official release OR through Trillian etc.
Any more tips? And many thanks for those already passed on 😀
[Edit: Could I make a request for this thread to be made in to a sticky one? NTL is a popular United Kingdom ISP and many users may be going through exactly the same thing.]

MemberYep – I’m in that boat with you both!
I’m in Altrincham …. same thing, hotmail connects no probs (via a proxy), messenger still won’t sign on. Little men spinning around.
If anyone has the answers, let me know ASAP cheers.

ParticipantDoes anyone get really long periods of the men spinning around… and then later it just bombs straight away and you have to keep clicking, “Retry” again and again quicker than is humanly possible?
Strange…

KeymasterNTL users have been reporting problems accessing Passport features (Hotmail, MSN Messenger, etc.). You may need to specify a NTL proxy, as described in this post in the ChetNet cablemodem forums.
And yes, you can specify a proxy for MSN Messenger. Go to Tools > Options > Connection and you’ll find the settings.

MemberSay Jeff I didn’t even know I was doing that to make my MSN work when I specify a proxy for MSN. How about that for a person who just learned how to turn the computer off and on. LOL LOL Just kidding I’m not that bad I think!
take care shell
