Wow… Your kids are getting to the age where RadioDisney definitely won’t sit well with them… so if you want to keep them tuned into that radio station only… get ready for some serious arguments!Foxfire, My daughter was allowed to listen to other music and to MTV believe it or not . Then I sat down with her and saw the latest Brittney Spears video where she portraying a teenager who was committing suicide in the bathtub.( call me crazy but I feel she doesn’t need that kind of influence) I also read some of the lyrics she brought home from school that the ” music teacher ” thought <– yes THOUGHT was going to be sung by the 7th graders in the spring concert .
Example : Quakin and vibratin your thighs ridin harder than guys.
Just didn’t sit well with me or other parents at the school. But amazingly before I complained the other parents set the teacher straight.
My daughter did get a little upset until she found out that the artists like Lindsey lohan, Raven, Kelly Clarkson ( so on and so forth ) had songs being played on it. She couldn’t believe that although they have clean versions on Radio Disney that they are songs by artists that she does like. It isn’t like kids bop where the kids are singing the songs. Its the actual recording artists themselves. I like country music myself BUT some of them are a little suggestive too. You may think I’m being harsh but I feel since her teenage years are so impressionable that if I help her out now she might not be so likely to get into trouble. Yes, I pay attention to what she hears and what she sees. I call it being a responsible parent.
So far no fights. But then I’m lucky, She is straight A’s and we just found out she is already being chosen for scholarships( plus it helps that she is only 12 ) so ( problems? ) bring them on . I am ready! lol

If you’re daughter is ok with everything, great! But this is coming from another responsible student as well. From observing other high school students as well, she’s going to want to listen to other genre’s of music and watch MTV and other similar stations. I mean, I’ve never once felt the urge to do anything dumb because of tv(not to say your daughter would). I’m also keeping in mind that you’re an adult, and that I’m a student, our points of view will be different on these kinds of subjects ;). I’m in no way saying you’re a bad parent, I’m sorry if it ever came off that way, I was just surprised lol! 😀

MemberCan we be on topic, this about picking a CD for a 12 year old, not a battle over censorship. I understand your concerns, but I want to give these kids something that other kids have that they don’t. I just want them to be happy, so lets set a side our differences and pick three artist from my list. I want to buy these CDs as soon as can so I can give them their present on Sunday.

MemberFor some reason I don’t like the Now CDs. I rather buy the full CD by the aritst, then buy a CD with songs you hear on radio everyday. This is a hard thing to do, it started out as a topic then it turn out to be a fight over censorship. I’m going to flip a coin over this.

Memberwhere were we ever talking about censorship? If you’re talking about me saying that some of the NOW cd’s censor the inappropriate language in a few songs, that’s not arguing over censorship. I don’t think that 12 year old kids should be listening to profane language… I thought that you’d agree and think “oh hey, he’s suggesting a CD that’s a mix of popular songs, and some of them just so happen to have bad language, but they censor out the inappropriate words so it’s kid-friendly.” But I guess that was taken as “oh hey, he said that this cd censors out inappropriate words on songs that have strong language, he’s arguing over censorship!”

MemberI wouldn’t suggest buying CD’s for anyone unless you have an idea of what they like. There is so much out there it’s not worth the risk. Age is also too hard to judge by. The best thing to do would proaobbly get a music soundtrack to a game or movie you know they like.

MemberOf the Christian music that I listen to, here’s a short list of those I would think a younger listening audience might enjoy:
4Him, Andy Chrisman, Barlow Girl, Margaret Becker, Bethany Dillon, Steven Curtis Chapman, DC Talk, John Elefante, Keith Jars of Clay, Newsboys, Out of the Grey, Brad Paisley, Twila Paris, Plumb, POD, Sixpence None-the-Richer, Scott Stapp, Rebecca St James, Switchfoot, Thousand Foot Krutch, Toby Mac, Jaci Velasquez
I hope that helps! It’s nice to see adults who care about what their children are listening to these days.
