MemberI’ve been using cable for a few years now, and always have been. I recently got an offer when I purchased my new computer which came with a DSL setup package. And now I just hafta hook it up.
It came with only 4 telephone filters and I need more if I want to have one connected to every phone. So then, is it really necessary to connect the telephone filters to every phone? or is it just one of those precautionary things. Are there any DSL users that have no problems even when they dont install the telephone filters?
Thanks.
EDIT: Moved to correct forum

ParticipantI’ve got DSL, and if you want to be able to hear things properly on all of your telephones then you’re going to have to hook up a DSL filter for each one.

MemberI ahve DSL! And not all my phones have a filter! And they all work fine! Hook up the filters on the phones that are directly plugged into the wall just to make sure! Cordless phone I find I have no problem with them having no filter!

MemberI‘ve been using DSL for over three years now. When I recently moved to a new house, I didn’t bother to hook filters up in most of the rooms, just the family room. I don’t know if this has anything to do with not plugging filters in all rooms when I unplug the modem and it’d just quit working, I’d have to go in the family room to unplug then plug the filter back in.

MemberAs a former technical support agent for BellSouth’s DSL, I can tell you several things about this subject. First… what the filters actually do. See, there are two types of signals that are at work on a DSL connection. You have the digital DSL signal which is what your internet runs off of and then you have your analog signal that your phone works off of. What the filters do is they seperate the two signals. I have seen exceptions, but for the most part, you will not be able to surf the net unless you have a filter on each and every phone line coming out of the wall. A few exeptions are digital phones, or if you have more than one phone line installed in your home. As long as you have a filter on every jack that is run off of the same line as your DSL, you’ll be fine. There are times that you would have a dedicated jack for your DSL where there is a filter installed at the box on the side of your home. With that, you don’t have to have filters on any other phones at all. I have seen alot of things where a customer would not have their filters installed. Usually, they would hear a buzzing sound on the line and their DSL modem would not find the DSL signal. Hope this info helps anyone out there that might need it.

KeymasterGreat answer JD! I used to have DSL (switched to cable almost two years ago). I had line filters between all the phones in the house, but was still having intermittent connectivity problems. Verizon came out and split the line so that I had one jack that was dedicated to the DSL connection. After that, the line filters were no longer needed.
By the way, you can pick up spare line filters at Radio Shack for a few bucks.

Thanks for all your posts guys. And jd_tech, I think your right because I tried connecting to the server to setup my DSL connection and it wouldn’t work. Probably because I don’t have filters on every phone. I got cable already now, so I don’t think I’ll be spending extra money on telephone filters, since my DSL was a free offer and was the reason why I even tried it. So I guess I’m givin up on DSL, even before I tried it…haha.:p
Thanks guys:)

Memberlazyturbo: try going to other room (that has the filter), unplug then plug it back in, it should work just fine for you.
