This is posted here first for full review before I post it publicly before the 14th.
Many of those who know me, I dislike almost all holidays with Valentine’s Day included. Now, I bet I could think up a couple choice words to describe it, but I’ll just be nice about it, okay? First of all, I’ll list two random objections of mine for the “day of love” as many refer to it as.
-The commercialization that someone has to give somebody gifts, candy and various other adult themed items to “prove” you love somebody. Do people really take this seriously? I feel sorry for anyone who feels a spouse or lover needs to buy them gifts to show they care (and vice versa). There’s certainly other ways to do this.
-The idea that a person’s passion and love needs to be expressed in a “extra special” manner on that day. Well, I fail to realize and understand why people can’t treat every day like Valentine’s Day and treat his/her spouse or lover with love, kindness and respect?
With that (and some other things, including all the pink and Cupid) I have to say I’m pretty against Valentine’s Day hence the idea of being Anti-Valentine. Though, I have to admit, the *only* thing I actually like and enjoy about Valentine’s Day is the conversation heart candy. Have you guys ever read the messages on the candy? Things like “Kiss Me”, “Love You”, “Marry Me” and “Hug Me” make me want to puke. If I had my way, I’d have a couple choices added to the hearts, wish to see a couple examples?
As you can see, nothing to do with “love” or anything like that. Good thing I’m not in control of such things, eh?
Well, that concludes the post. I’m interesting to hear from others about their opinions of Valentine’s Day (good and bad). 🙂
February 9, 2009 at 2:45 am #173009Doris KenneyParticipantWell, I must say you’ve captured my sentiments about the day quite well. Flowers die – candy is very bad for my hips.
Any takers to be my UN-Valentine this year? I’m low maintenance – no flowers, no candy, no dinner – what could be easier?
February 9, 2009 at 4:44 am #173004detn8rParticipantI’m not sure why you decided to post this here first? Did you think some of us were going to **** on your parade?
Opinions are opinions, that’s cool — just make sure you don’t insult anyone with them.
I’m sure out of many North American “holidays”, Hallmark’s Valentines Day is not well liked by many just because it’s invented by Hallmark. But then again, if you have a partner to share the day with, I guess it wouldn’t make you puke would it?
Personally, I couldn’t care less about it, just another day to me. Actually, I liked getting and giving Valentine’s Day cards when I was a kid. Was kinda fun.
February 9, 2009 at 7:49 pm #173005imported_Ven0mMemberWell, to make sure I didn’t step on too many toes when I decide to post it here first to see if it was acceptable enough. 🙂
Oh, I don’t wish to insult anyone-just want to hear their perspective on the day itself.
…curse you Hallmark! =P
February 11, 2009 at 6:23 am #173003FanaticMemberHey, I personally like Valentine’s Day — I’m a romantic at heart — but I also agree with your points about treating your significant other with love and respect every day.
Having said that, I think that V-Day is more for women than men, and more for bragging rights (“MY boyfriend/husband bought me THIS/took me to a fancy restaurant, etc. for Valentines… what did YOURS do?”), than about love and devotion.
February 11, 2009 at 8:31 am #173008PhilipModeratorFor me it’s just another day, but Valentine’s Day here has always been very commercialized. A lot of people don’t mind spending ridiculous amounts of money on this day, and hotels and restaurants make a killing when it comes to romantic dinners and all that gooey stuff.
The place where I work offers a romantic candlelight dinner for two with a 5-course meal, wine, small gifts and me supplying the background piano music…all for $166 or so. For me this is a huge amount of money to spend, but lots of people think otherwise. Anyways, each to his/her own.
February 11, 2009 at 4:44 pm #173006imported_Ven0mMemberI agree, that is too much money to spend on such a thing. Still, there’s an easier way to do it and show a person you love them every single day without the need to put yourself in the hole purchasing expensive gifts.
But that doesn’t mean there can’t be romance, because there can be. Now, who wants some candy hearts? =P
With that being said, I’ll refine my first post, and post it publicly for everyone else’s feelings and opinions on Valentine’s Day. Thanks a lot everyone for replying. 🙂
February 11, 2009 at 6:28 pm #173010Doris KenneyParticipantI’d like some candy hearts please! 😀
February 11, 2009 at 7:06 pm #173007imported_Ven0mMemberVery well. =P Candy hearts for all. 🙂
P.S. The official topic (with stuff edited and added) is now posted in the lounge. 🙂
