I use a normal cd and a rewriter but my computer does not see either.
I have used microsoft support did not fix it. Went to add new hardware and both have exclamation marks next to both so I tried to add them again but get this:
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
Any ideas? :crying:
Oh and I checked all the wiring at the back etc all seems ok
Sarah, is this new hardware that you just added? Or is this an existing drive that used to work, but stopped working? Internal or external?
Same thing happens with my CD drive in my laptop. THe CD drive works intermittantly but the DVD always works (so I know it’s not the laser) What brand is it? Perhaps it’s a common problem with that make and model?
I had this issue long time ago and honestly I don’t remember how I solved it. You can check out these links from forums where they reported the same problem.

Not sure of the make will look when I get home. But I was told to uninstall them and disconnect them and then try adding them again. Will see if that works, will let you know how I get on.

Well I fixed my cd drive etc I had the with the error code 41. This is how I fixed it:-
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965- e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
4. On the File menu, click Export.
5. In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save.
6. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.Note If this data type is missing, go to Method 2.
7. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
8. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
