She recently switched over from dial-up to a faster internet connection, and now everytime she signs into her Windows Live it freezes and then disconnects. She even tried re-installing the messenger and that did nothing. Think you guys can help?

How long has it been happening for? Most of the time it eventually repairs it’s self, however. Also, they are using the newest version of WLM? Does it happen with MSN Messenger?
February 19, 2007 at 9:18 pm #157512KacenMemberShe tried using newest version, downgraded to MSN 7.5 and it still wouldn’t work. Happened since she got her cable modem last Thursday.
February 20, 2007 at 2:37 am #157508PhilipModeratorTry signing in here MSN Web Messenger Also please read this post https://bigblueball.com/forums/windows-live-messenger/39265-having-wlm-problems-read-first.html
If your friend is still having problems after a few days, try creating a new WLM account and signing in with that. Let me know how it goes.
February 21, 2007 at 12:44 am #157513KacenMemberShes using that basic Windows messenger that comes with Windows.

Did she try creating a new account and signing in with that? The more details you give, the easier it will be to help. For example, the computer specs, what firewall is installed, etc.
The latest version of Windows Live Messenger is 8.1; I’m using it myself and it appears to be very stable.
February 25, 2007 at 6:27 pm #157516KacenMemberHer Windows Live just started working again, seems it just fixed itself.

March 3, 2007 at 5:11 am #157510PhilipModeratorHi:
Did you read my posts (#4 and #7)?
March 4, 2007 at 9:38 pm #157518KacenMemberShe insisted that it was a messenger problem that wouldn’t be solved by her logging in on a different account but I could try and coax her to try it more.
March 5, 2007 at 2:42 am #157511PhilipModeratorOK, please persuade her to do it.
March 8, 2007 at 6:11 am #157519KacenMemberShe keeps saying she doesn’t want to re-do everything on a new address. She wants to get her current address to work.
March 8, 2007 at 10:40 am #157507dreadMemberBefore you or her does any of this, if she is does not want to lose any of her emotes, winks, dps etc… get MSN BackUp
I suggest using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove WLM. Link for it is here. Uninstall any addons she might have for WLM.
After she gets it uninstalled I would check the registry and see if any registry items is left over. HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMSNMessenger, HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows Live, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMSNMessenger.
After you do all of that goto C:Documents and SettingsHer User AccountApplication DataMicrosoft and delete the directory MSN Messenger, there might be other directories in there to like Windows Live Call if there is delete them. Then goto C:Documents and SettingsHer User AccountLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoft and delete the directories Windows Live Contacts and Messenger. Then goto C:Documents and SettingsHer User Account and delete the directory Contacts. Then goto C:Program Files and delete the directory MSN Messenger. I would restart the computer and get CCleaner and run it. In Ccleaner run the Cleaner and click on Issues and run that. Then I would go and get the latest version of WLM and install it. Then use MSN BackUp if she backed up anything to restore her emotes, winks etc…
Is she having any other problems beside WLM? Did she remove her old dial-up connection from Network Connections? I would make sure that old dial-up connection is gone and that nothing else is using it. Look in Internet Options aslo under the tab Connections.
