MemberI had the same problem, and I could not live with it even for a day, so I decided to format my PC and re-install 98SE.

ParticipantBoot into DOS and check to see if explorer.exe is in c:Windows, c:Windowssystem or c:windowssystem32, it should be in one of those folders, you could try to pull explorer.exe or explorer.ex_ (You’ll need to expand it) from the CD, and put it in c:windows.
Otherwise, slave off and backup the disk, then reinstall Win98 in the same folder (c:windows), I -think- that will fix all the OS files while leaving the programs intact. (It worked on Win95)

(It worked on Win95)Close Dave. Get your buddy to pop in the Win98 CD inc to this drive, then close the autorun window that pops up. Click Start and then run. If the start menu is still popping up then disappearing hit the “windows key + r” when you is it. This will cause the run diolog to popup. Type in this, “z:win98setup.exe” substute “z” for the drive letter that you have the Win98 CD in.
That will do what I like to call a soft-install, it will return all your windows files back to the orginal files, you will have to do to microsoft update and reupdate the computer. This will not effect act of your current files, but some programs will require you to reinstall them but more than most will remain intact.
Sidenote: I sujust you buy Norton Systemworks. It has got a cool function that allows you to scan your computer for errors and repair them. It’s called One Button Check Up. It is alittle more imdepth then the straight scandisk. It checks the stability of the Registry, Programs, Hard Drive, etc… I have the 2g3 ver. and I have it setup to run once a day. it scans and repair the errors automaticly. If you do end up buying and money is not an object then try to get 2004 version, otherwise for for the 2003 version.
